Carlisle Pier Controversy In September the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company demolished the old Carlisle Pier in Dún Laoghaire. While no-one will regret the loss of the 1960s building, concealed within it was the intact 150 year old railway station that has now been demolished. I have referred the matter to An Bord Pleanála, as I believe the demolition is illegal. Initially the Council said planning was not required, but they are now back-tracking on the issue. Meanwhile the Harbour Company is looking to place a surface car park on the site. I believe that this is a completely inappropriate use for the Pier. If restored, the old railway station building could be a fantastic venue for cultural events such as the Farmer’s Market or the Festival of World Cultures. I want to see the Harbour developed as a recreational spot for the people of Dún Laoghaire and I welcome the opening of the East Pier Battery to the public. I’m also pleased with recent works covering over the railway tracks beside the Pavilion Theatre. When finished, it will be a real asset to the town. Now is a good time to put in place a strong Local Area Plan for Dún Laoghaire that sets out the kind of development and positive changes that are necessary. Please don’t hesitate to contact me through my website or in writing with your own thoughts on the future of the County town. www www.CiaranCuffe.ie

Marine road in the centre of Dún Laoghaire It’s a busy time on Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council as the new County Development Plan is finalised. The new plan sets out the ground-rules for development in the County from 2010-2016. Last July the Green Party made a detailed submission with our proposals for how the County can develop and prosper over the next five years. We called for a new task force to revitalise Dún Laoghaire town centre, the County’s first ‘eco town’ at Cherrywood and improved public transport with a coastal cycle-way and an extended Luas to Bray. The Green Party are also committed to safeguarding green belts in the County and are insisting that lands at Clontra in Shankill and Fernhill in Stepaside must be protected from development. I’m glad to say that many of our recommendations are included in the Draft Plan. Recently the County Council also advertised for a ‘brand’ manager for the town of Dún Laoghaire and I’m hopeful that whoever is appointed to the new post will fly the flag for the County Town. There are some challenges ahead. There are suggestions that the HSS ferry may be discontinued at the end of the year, and Dundrum Shopping Centre is drawing shoppers away from Dún Laoghaire. There are also proposals from some Fine Gael councillors to rezone amenity lands beside Fernhill Gardens in Sandyford for housing and to allow more out-of-town shopping on lands near Kilternan. Has nothing been learned from the controversial re-zonings over the last thirty years? If the councillors succeed in re-zoning more land the proposals will go on display in the County Hall in Dún Laoghaire and you will be able to comment on the revised Plan. I’ll keep you posted. www www.CiaranCuffe.ie/Vision
