Chocobo Dream - Come on! Get up you lazy feather-ball! How much longer do you plan to snore? I know you’re getting old but I don’t have all day, you know! I have some deliveries to do! Mmm… I beg your pardon…? Where am I? Paddock… Straw… Master Cloud! I’m so happy to see you! - Ah! At last you’re awake! Want a hug?! What’s up old chap? You’re starving, aren’t you? Well, you’ve been wearing yourself out in the Gold Saucer yesterday. Don’t move. I’ll be back in a minute. Goodness me! I am back in the ranch. It really was a dream then. You cannot imagine the adventure I have just had! I am still in shock! Yesterday evening I went to bed, I closed my eyes and all of a sudden, I found myself in a place utterly different from the world I am used to live in. And believe me; I do know what being used to something means. We Chocobos are homeloving creatures who do not like our habits to be changed. We find it scary. If it actually happens to me, I cannot get over it easily. Anyway… I am rambling on again! Old Chocobos like me are rather talkative, you see … In short, in a wink of an eye, I found myself right in the middle of an unknown valley, in an unknown village, inhabited by unknown almondeyed Humans. The raised houses were made of wood. They were exposed to the four winds. The pointy shape of their grey-tiled roofs looked delicate and refined. I did not understand. I was flabbergasted. Yet, I started to go forth. Carefully of course. I could not just stand there like a common ostrich, could I! Thus, I walked up and down the village, in the hope of bumping into someone familiar. No luck. The almond-eyed Humans were busy all around. Some of them seemed to be patrolling. They were on the defensive as if looking out for enemies. They were wearing double-breasted tunics with wide sleeves, baggy pleated trousers and straw sandals. Long swords hung from their belts. Their hair was tied up in a stretched-out little bun and they had shaved the top of their skull down to the forehead. The other inhabitants’ clothing was simpler. They had a different hairstyle and did not bear any sword. These

Humans were tending to their different everyday tasks. Fishermen, shepherds, potters… Everyone was concentrating hard on their job. As for me, I was as transparent as a ghost. This busy little world appeared not to see me. Why was I here? How was I to go home? I ended up leaving the village to enter the mountains. I walked for hours without even feeling tired. I passed through endless luxuriant forests and sun-filled clearings. At last, I stopped before very long stairs made of stone. These stairs were leading through vermilion wooden arches placed at regular intervals. I could not see the top because of a heavy mist. Suddenly, I heard a pretty voice calling me: - Come to me Choco-chan… Don’t be afraid… come… It said. I would lie if I said that I was not frightened but, I was deeply convinced that the voice came from a benevolent being so I went up the hazy stairs. There was a huge and strange monument up there. The architecture looked elaborate. A covered yard supported by bright red columns forewent the white façade. Two layered roofs with railings in-between topped the whole thing. The voice was still calling out my name.

It sounded closer. Then I

walked through the red colonnade. As a matter of fact, this building was only an entrance to larger grounds. I was now in a beautiful garden filled with

glittering

and

sweet-scented

familiar-looking

flowers.

I

was

surrounded by more constructions, groves, ponds with arched wooden bridges and so on… - Hello, Choco-chan. Believe me or not. The Human creature who had just appeared before me was no other than the sweet Aerith, a long dead friend of Master Cloud’s. She appeared translucent and just like the flowers, she glowed with beauty. - Aerith! I was sure that I knew this voice! How on earth is this happening? You were… - You are right, my friend. I am dead but my soul was miscarried here. Right! There is something there that I have to make clear. You must wonder how Aerith and I can communicate, don’t you? Well, simply in our

minds. You know, we Chocobos are telepathic beings but unlike dear Aerith, few Humans are on the same wavelength, you see. - What is this place? Why are we here for? I asked. - Set your mind at rest my feathery friend. I am going to explain it all. When I died, my soul left my body. I wandered through darkness and one day, I woke up here, as crystal-clear as water. I do not know neither why nor how it happened. This land goes by the name of “Japan”. It is part of another universe, another time. The almond-eyed Humans are different from the Humans that you know. Something remains unchanged however: they, too, fear their enemies. Among them are mighty warriors with an unwavering sense of honour. They are called “Samurai”. In the way of the sword, the « Bushido », they fight for their clan with courage. When my soul fell from the sky, this pious people thought of me as a goddess. They gave me the name of “Shiroi Jousei”, the White Lady, and they built this temple for me. Have you seen my lovely flowers? Days are long here so, in remembrance of my old church, I grew this garden. - What a surprise! I am delighted to see you again, Aerith! But… How am I here? - I led your spirit to me while you were asleep. You know, I passed away so suddenly that I did not even have time to say goodbye to those I love. I worried myself sick. Since I am dwelling here, I tried to reach my former world numerous times but I failed up to now. Today I finally succeeded in reaching a sympathetic mind: yours. Reading your thoughts, I saw Cloud’s face, Tifa’s and all my dear friend’s one last time. I am fully satisfied now. At last I can rest in peace. Thanks to you. - Here you are. That is all. It is time for us to part. My spirit is weakening. My soul is already flying beyond to the afterlife… To my beloved Zack… Farewell, Choco-chan! Please take care of everyone for me… Then Aerith disappeared and I woke up in my paddock. As I told you before, I still cannot believe that it did happen.

Hello! What is this glittering thing stuck under my claws? A flower! One of Aerith’s magical flowers! It was not a dream then… - Here I am old chap! Sorry! I said I wouldn’t be long but my dear Tifa rang. I’m in a hurry now. Here is some Gysahl. Enjoy!
