Chinese Military machine is fuelled by its rapidly growing economy.

gets over 40 billion dollars as foreign direct investment while India gets two billion  China had an export turnover of 322 billion dollars in 2002 against India’s 40 billion dollars in 2002-03.  China’s official defense budget in 2000 was 14.5 billion dollars. In 2001 it was 17.05 billion. The actual figure could be about three times higher at 50 billion dollars ( 1 Billion = 1000’000’000 )(1 Dollar = 50 Rs )

Power Projection  Today

China is a nuclear power with an estimated stockpile of 400 nuclear warheads ranging from 5 Mt to low Kt warheads  It has a wide range of missiles from 158 Km range CSS-8 weapon systems to the CSS-4 with a range of 13,000 Km  China is rapidly modernizing its blue water navy to achieve its aim of ‘power projection’. It has a large submarine force of some 71 submarines, though it lacks enough aircraft carriers

Just some of China’s key weapon systems imported from Russia includes fighter aircraft: the Su-27 Flanker and the Su-30MMKK, Sovremennyclass destroyers, Kilo-class diesel submarines, and SA-10/15/20 surface-to-air missiles  Expenditures on foreign weapons were roughly $800 million per year in the early 1990s.  By the late 1990s, expenditures had risen to $1.5 billion.  By 2002, the Chinese were spending $3.6 billion annually on imported weapons. Throughout the decade of the1990s China imported an average of $775 million worth of arms each year.
