We left Kashgar and finally began to cycle on the Karakorum Highway along the river valley, climbing gradually from the 1300m of Kashgar towards the 4700m Khunjerab pass into Pakistan (about 500km away). These mountains are some of the youngest mountains in the world and are getting higher every year. The extremes of temperature and the consequent erosion have created some amazing geological features:
