BP TO SPEND US$130MN ON CLEAN FUELS PRODUCTION BP plans to invest more than US$130 million on new clean diesel facilities at its Whiting, Indiana refinery. With the addition of a new distillate hydrotreater, the refinery will produce additional supplies of ultra low sulfur diesel fuel that meets or exceeds all on-road diesel regulations. The new unit will have the capacity to produce approximately 36 000 barrels per day (bpd) of the ultra low sulfur diesel product. BP has already started preliminary work on the project and expects to complete construction in mid-2006.

FW/HUANQIU JV STUDIES CHINESE CTL FACILITY Foster Wheeler Energy Ltd and China Huanqiu Contracting & Engineering Corp are to undertake a Stage I feasibility study contract for Sasol and its Chinese partners, China Shenhua Coal Liquefaction Corp Ltd and Ningxia Luneng Energy and High Chemistry Investment Group Co Ltd. The contract covers two 80000 bpd coal-to-liquids (CTL) facilities to be located in the Ningxia Autonomous Region and in Shaanxi Province. This would be the first use of Sasol’s CTL technology outside South Africa. The Foster Wheeler/ Huanqiu joint venture will evaluate the available technologies for the projects and complete feasibility study Stage I work to integrate these

with the associated utilities and infrastructure systems. Huanqiu will provide gasification experience together with the essential local technical, commercial and legislative information.

CHEVRON NIGERIA AWARDS GTL EPC CONTRACT A KBR/Snamprogetti/JGC joint venture has been awarded a US$1.7 billion engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the Chevron Nigeria Ltd/Nigeria National Petroleum Corp gas to liquids (GTL) facility in Escravos, Nigeria. The Escravos GTL plant will convert natural gas to produce ultra clean GTL diesel. The plant will have an output of 34 000 barrels per day of GTL diesel, naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas for export. The KBR/Snamprogetti/ JGC joint venture’s project directorate will be located in KBR’s offices in Houston, Texas.

PETROCHEMICALS AKER KVAERNER WINS CHINESE ENGINEERING CONTRACT Aker Kvaerner Netherlands BV has signed a contract with Univation Technologies for the basic engineering of a new, world-scale polyethylene plant at the Quanguang Petrochemical Complex in Quangzhou, Fujian province, China. The plant, which will use Univation’s UNIPOL polyethylene technology, consists of two world-scale 400 000 tonnes per annum (tpa) lines. The basic engineering will be

executed from Aker Kvaerner’s Zoetermeer office in the Netherlands, with support from the company’s China organization. Start-up is scheduled in 2008. The polyethylene plant is part of a larger project that includes expansion of Fujian’s refinery from 80 000 bpd to 240 000 bpd, a new 800 000 tonnes per annum (tpa) cracker, a 400 000 tpa polypropylene plant and an aromatics plant.

CHEMICALS FW PLAYS PES CONTRACTOR ROLE FOR SAUDI CHEMICAL PLANT Foster Wheeler Energy Ltd has secured a project engineering services (PES) contract from Jubail Chemical Industries Co for its epichlorohydrin and chlor-alkali project (Project HASSAD) in Al-Jubail Industrial City, Saudi Arabia. As PES contractor, Foster Wheeler will co-ordinate the engineering, procurement and construction phases of the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2007.

PULP & PAPER METSO TO SUPPLY TISSUE MACHINE TO CHINA Metso Paper will supply a tissue machine to Fujian Heng Li Group Co Ltd in Nanan City, Fujian Province, China.
