Chemistry Lab #5 Title: Separation Technique; Use of the separating funnel. Aim: To observe the separation of oil and water (immiscible liquids) using the separating funnel. Materials/ Apparatus:
1 1 1 3 1
clampstand separating funnel with cork filter funnel 250 ml conical flasks stirring rod
Reagents: Oil Water Diagram: < Draw Apparatus>
Method: 1. Attach the separating funnel to the clampstand. 2. Mix oil and water in a conical flask. 3. With the use of the filter funnel and the stirring rod, pour the mixture into the separating funnel. 4. Close the separating funnel with the cork. 5. Shake the separating funnel with the mixture inside of it. 6. After shaking, invert the separating funnel and open the stopcock to release the pressure that builds up inside of it. 7. Allow the mixture to settle. 8. Open the valve to allow the water and oil to be carefully collected in separate conical flasks. 9. Make observations and collect and record data in a suitable format.
Observation:
Discussion: -what is a separating funnel? Why did you use the separating funnel to separate the oil and water? -explain why the oil and water did not mix, for example, their immiscibility, polarity, solubility and types of molecules they are composed of….
