CHARTER SCHOOL PARENT ADVOCACY PROJECT OVERVIEW THE PROBLEM: TRADITIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL PARENTS ATTACK CHARTER SCHOOLS ! ! ! ! !

Traditional public school parents are very vocal in attacking charter schools. These parents provide the media with a sympathetic symbol of what’s “wrong” with charter schools. They often disseminate misinformation about charter schools. The criticisms these parents raise are an effective way to discredit charter schools in the eyes of elected officials. Institutional opponents of charter schools—including unions and school advocates aligned with them— support the work of these parents.

THE DILEMMA: NO CHARTER SCHOOL PARENT VOICE ! ! ! !

We lack of a visible and vocal “parent” voice on behalf of charter schools to counter our critics. We need strong parent voices to rebut the misinformation disseminated by our opponents. Without a strong parent voice supporting the needs of charter schools—and fighting against harmful budget or policy decisions—charter schools will continue to come under attack. Without a strong parent voice, charter schools are at risk of losing money, losing legislative support, and possible being forced to close.

THE SOLUTION: EDUCATING & ORGANIZING CHARTER SCHOOL PARENTS ! ! ! ! !

Charter school parents need to be educated on the threats their own schools face due to the attacks of charter school opponents. Charter school parents need to be organized in order to defend their schools and the charter school movement. Charter school parents have the power to fight for the needs of their children and their school. Charter school parents can defeat bad policy and funding decisions. Charter school parents can engage their local legislators in support of their school’s immediate needs.
