Charles Dickens Fact Day Fact: Nabokov, Vladimir (1899-1977): Russian-born American novelist, essayist, and professor of literature. In his course “Masters of European Fiction” at Cornell University, Nabokov, at the suggestion of Edmund Wilson, included Bleak House as one of the texts. His lecture structure, themes, and style are included in his Lectures on Literature (1980), edited by Fredson Bowers and published after Nabokov’s death. #1(Compound-Complex) After reading this fact, I couldn’t help but to say “WOW!” out loud, because just the day before while reading my marginalia by Vladimir Nabokov, I noticed a title of a book, “Bleak House”, yet little did I know it is the ninth novel written by Dickens. #2(Compound) Perhaps by accident, Vladimir Nabokov named Charles Dickens a “Master of European Fiction”, when he included Mr. Dickens in his teachings and writing yet never the less Mr. Nabokov showed great admiration and respect for Charles Dickens through his actions. #3(Simple) Taking this one step further, in Vladimir Nabokov’s book Reading in Bed, he spent an entire four pages explaining the meaning of a true reader and artist, he could fine no one better to define a true writer and reader than Charles Dickens. #4(Complex) Moreover in the eyes of Nabokov Vladimir, Charles Dickens should be more than the literary father to a ninth grade English class, he believes that he should a guidance to everyone in their lives, which is why he decided to include Mr. Dickens in his writing and class. #5(Compound) In closing Vladimir Nabokov truly knew what it takes to be a genuine artist in the literary world, and Mr. Dickens displayed the skills and characteristics of real writer in his life and masterpieces.
