CHAPTER LOGS Chapter 1 • Characters- The Ixopo Hills • Summary: The author talks about the difference of the hills and how one is healthy and how one is not. Chapter 2 • Characters- Stephen, Girl, Kumalo’s Wife, Theophilus Msimangu, Gertrude, John • Summary: A little girl brings Stephen Kumalo a letter. The letter is from Theophilus Msimangu. The letter says that Stephen Kumalo needs to go to Johannesburg because his sister is sick. Chapter 3 • Characters- Stephen, Sibeko • Summary: Stephen Kumalo waits for the train and meats a 12-year-old boy. Once he his about to board the train his companion passes on a request from Sibeko to go and see somebody. When he leaves the station Stephen starts to worry. Chapter 4 • Characters- Stephen, Robber, Mr. Mafolo • Summary: Stephen arrives at the Johannesburg train station. Stephen gets robbed from a man that says he would by him a ticket. Stephen finds a man and the man offers to take him to see his sister. Chapter 5 • Characters- Ms. Lithebe, Stephen, Msimangu • Summary: Stephen finds out that his sister was a prostitute and that she lives in a bad area. Chapter 6 • Characters: Stephen, Gertrude, and Msimangu • Summary: Msimangu takes Stephen to where his sister is. They find his sister and Stephen tells her to go to the mission house with him and she agrees.

Chapter 7 • Characters: Gertrude, John, Stephen, and Msimangu • Summary: Stephen tries to convince John to go back with him but he says no. Stephen and Msimangu got and look for Absalom. Chapter 8 • Characters: Stephen, Msimangu, Mrs. Mkize, and Hlabeni. • Summary: Stephen and Msimangu are looking for Absalom. Chapter 9 • Characters: A child, Mrs. Seme, and Mr. Dubula • Summary: They talk about how it is in Johannesburg. Chapter 10 • Characters: Stephen, Msimangu • Summary: Stephen and Msimangu are looking for Absalom. They found out that he has a girlfriend and that he has attended school. Chapter 11 • Characters: Stephen, Msimangu, Father Vincent • Summary: Stephen and Msimangu look for Absalom. Msimangu takes Stephen to Ezenzeleni where he can rest at the mission house. A white priest comes in and tells them that someone got shot by a native. Chapter 12 • Characters: Stephen, Msimangu • Summary: Stephen and Msimangu are at the Mission House when Mrs. Ndlela tells Msimangu that the cops are looking for Absalom. Chapter 13 • Characters: Stephen, and Msimangu • Summary: Msimangu takes Stephen to Ezenzeleni. Chapter 14 • Characters: Stephen, John, Msimangu, Absalom • Summary: Stephen and Msimangu found out that Absalom killed the white man and then Stephen

starts asking Absalom questions. Chapter 15 • Characters: Stephen, Gertrude, Mrs. Lithebe, and Father Vincent • Summary: Father Vincent and Stephen tries to help Absalom in his case and prove him not guilty.

Chapter 16 • Characters: Stephen, Absalom’s wife • Summary: Stephen visits Absalom’s girlfriend and asks her if she wants to be Absalom’s wife and she said yes. Then Stephen takes her to live with him. Chapter 17 • Characters: Stephen, Father Vincent, Mrs. Lithebe, Gertrude, Mr. Carmichael. • Summary: Stephen checks on Absalom in prison to see if he is okay. He meets the lawyer at the mission and is trying to find out what Absalom has done. The lawyer said that he would take this case for free.
