Chapter Logs Chapter 18 Characters: Kumalo, Jarvis, Mrs. Jarvis, Police Captain Summary: Short description of the land that the Jarvis’ owned. Mr. Jarvis finds out his son has been killed. He has to make the decision if he wants to leave and go to Johannesburg. Vocabulary:

Chapter 19 Characters: Jarvis, Mrs. Jarvis, Mr. Harrison Summary: The Jarvis’ go to the Harrison’s house and Mr. Jarvis talks to him about all the things that have been going on so far, and Mr. Harrison gives him details. Then they began to discuss the Jarvis’ deceased son, and all he had done with trying to help the natives. Vocabulary:

Chapter 20 Characters: Same as chapter before this. Summary: Mr. Jarvis goes to his son’s house and looks through. He finds all the books he was reading before he died. Then he finds the one he was writing and he reads it. The book he was writing was just talking about how people are doing to wrong things. Vocabulary:

Chapter 21 Characters: Same as chapter before this. Summary: Jarvis learns more about his son, and begins to really understand what his son had gone through in his life. There was a memorial service. After the funeral, he talks to many people, which he has never known and never met before. Once he finished reading the book his son wrote, he told his wife that she should read it. Vocabulary:

Chapter 22 Characters: Absalom, Johannes, Matthew, Court

Summary: Absalom, Matthew, and Johannes g to court for killing Arthur Jarvis. They interrogate Absalom and question him about all the concepts of the murder. Absalom encounters Mr. Jarvis and can’t make eye contact. Vocabulary:

Chapter 23 Characters: Author of book. Summary: Gold found in an orange province, and people are becoming rich because of it. They talk good and bad of the gold found. Some people hope it does not become a second Johannesburg like the others, because that would be catastrophic. Vocabulary:

Chapter 24 Characters: Mr. Jarvis Summary: Jarvis reads a paper written by his son, it said that Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis were good parents. But it also said that South Africa, had not taught him anything at all. Jarvis takes a break and later comes back and reads the rest of what his song wrote. Vocabulary:

Chapter 25 Characters: Jarvis’s, Kumalo Summary: Kumalo informs Mr. Jarvis of the fact that it was indeed his son who killed Arthur. Mr. Jarvis is not angry, but quite sad. The Jarvis’s take a walk. Vocabulary:

Chapter 26 Characters: John Kumalo, Stephen Kumalo, Msimangu, Jarvis, John Harrison Summary: J. Kumalo gives a speech about the gold. Police think he’s dangerous. Jarvis and Harrison leave, and then a strike happens. But it wasn’t too bad because only 3 people died. That was a relief for them. Vocabulary:

Characters: Mrs. Lithebe, Gertrude, Kumalo, Absaloms’ fiancée Summary: Mrs. Lithebe and Gertrude have a discussion about not talking to people who laugh carelessly. A women comes in with a newspaper that has an article that says that a native killed a householder. Gertrude decides that she wants to become a nun, but Mrs. Lithebe says that’s it’s not easy and that Gertrude should pray about it. Gertrude gets a woman to take care of her baby, and they decide to keep it from Kumalo. Vocabulary:

Chapter 28 Characters: Absalom, Johannes, J. Kumalo, Court Summary: The judge states all the evidence within the case. The judge decides that John, and Johannes are not guilty. Absalom is found guilty of murdering Arthur, and is sentenced to hanging until death. Vocabulary:

Chapter 29 Characters: Kumalo, Gertrude, Mrs. Lithebe, Msimangu, Absalom Summary: There is a feast at Mrs. Lithebe’s house. Absolam and his fiancée get married. Gertrude commits to being a nun, and the next day she is gone.
