CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE Introduction The pupils of today are to be prepared for the workplace of tomorrow so computers must become a more integral part of the current curriculum of the school system. Even in the workplace of today, computers are so important that most business could not function without them. Multimedia packages are effective in many reasons. One of the most important reasons is that students like learning in the environment that the computer has to offer. Multimedia packages today are much more user-friendly and entertaining that their predecessors. (Gifford, 1993) Contrary to the traditional teaching methods, Multimedia forces the pupils to retain focused on the topic at hand. In the classroom, it is easy for the students to simply nod their heads every time the teacher looks in their direction. However, Multimedia programs insure that pupils pay attention and understand by constantly testing them on the information they are being taught. (Malone and Reiland, 1995) These packages are also effective because they deal with more practical examples than those in any textbooks. (Mumford, 1992) The computer has allowed the pupils to become a more active participant in his/her education, students have changed from complacent, passive out-lookers to active participants in the classroom. Multimedia has encouraged students to explore more and memorize less. (Matray and Proulx, 1995)

The researchers wanted to know the effectiveness of multimedia presentation approach in teaching Plants with the use of presentation software specifically the Microsoft PowerPoint being one of operating software in contrary to the traditional method which the lecture method is.

Statement of the Problem This study seeks to find out the effectiveness of the use of multimedia presentation approach in teaching Plants. Specifically, the researchers of the study seek to answer the following questions; 1. What are the performances of the respondents exposed to the Multimedia presentation approach and Lecture method of the a. pretest? b. post test? 2. Is there a significant difference between the performance of the respondents exposed to lecture and multimedia presentation approach? 3. What are the respondents’ perceptions towards the multimedia presentation approach in learning Plants?

Null hypothesis Ho: There is no significant difference between the performances of the respondents exposed to the Multimedia presentation approach and the Lecture method of the pretest and posttest.

Significance of the Study The primary concern of this study is to determine the effectiveness of multimedia presentation approach to Grade V pupils of Mahayahay Elementary School (MES), Kapatagan Lanao del Norte. The result of this study may give intuition and encouragement to the teachers in pursuing on using multimedia presentation approach as a medium of instruction in teaching, to promote effective learning and to enhance if not replace the traditional method of teaching. Multimedia presentation is easy to obtain, modify and create. They are versatile and a great asset to any classroom. Good multimedia presentations may take time to produce or adapt, but they can be shared and can be used year after year. They can be used for whole class presentations and reviews, for drill or for individual work. This study is not only for the benefit of the teachers but also for the students, for better understanding to their lessons. As it has been proven, intensity of lights colors and attractive materials will help inculcate ideas in the minds of the students. Scope and Limitation The scope of this study focused on the basic concept of Plants, since it is too broad, the researchers only focus on the following concepts: Importance of plants to people and animals, Parts of the Plants, Plant Needs, and Classifying Plants. Section A will be exposed to multimedia presentation approach while section B will be exposed to lecture method. 3

This study will have multimedia presentation approach as medium of instruction. The time which will be given is only 1 hour everyday with in 4 days. The same time spent by the teachers in day to day classes of science lessons. Only the researchers utilized and can input the data on the computer. Students then can only view the multimedia presentation on Plants made by the researchers on the computer. Operational Definition of Terms Effectiveness- the respondents’ performance exposed to multimedia presentation approach Multimedia Presentation Approach- is used in promoting the concept on plants - allows one to show colored text and images with simple animation - the use of presentation software specifically the Microsoft PowerPoint being one of the operating software in contrary to the traditional way of teaching. Lecture Method- traditional way of teaching where the teacher does all the talking in explaining the topic with the use of charts and posters. MES- Mahayahay Elementary School, Lanao del Norte Performance- the increased of scores from pre test and posttest of the respondents Pre-test- test given to the respondents before they will be exposed to the multimedia presentation approach and the lecture method. Post-test- test given to the respondents after they are exposed to the multimedia presentation approach and the lecture method Perception – the insight or intuitive judgment of the pupils after they engaged the Multimedia presentation approach.
