Chapter 3 ANALYSIS AND RESULT This chapter presents the analysis and result of the data gathered. The presentation follows the sequence situation as appeared in chapter one.

Table 3.1 shows the overall mean of the 5s operation survey result under sort in Southway College of Technology. It is shown in the table that sort got an overall mean of 3.47 with a verbal description of highly manifested which means that sort as one of the 5S operations is clearly shown or visible in Southway College of Technology.

This result is

similar

which

to

the

study

conducted

by

Henderson

(2008)

shows

a

favorable result on removing items not needed for current production operations. Hence, based on the result presented in the table, it clearly shows that sort is an effective operation in the quality of service in Southway College of Technology.

As seen in table 3.2 is the overall mean of the 5s operation survey result under set in Southway College of Technology. Set got an overall

mean of 3.48 which is describe as highly manifested, therefore set as one of the 5S operation is also visible and have been observed in Southway College of Technology. This result contrasts with the affirmation from the study of Mula (2000) which shows unfavorable result because according to the respondents set is a time-consuming operation and requires a lot of manpower.

Table 3.3 presents the overall mean of the 5s operation survey result under shine in Southway College of Technology. As seen on the table, shine got an overall mean of 3.52 which is describe as highly manifested. Similarly, Yeong (2005) asserted that out of the five operations applied in his study shine got the highest average. Based on Yeong’s (2005) result of study, 98% of the respondents affirm that shine is needed in every company because workers are strictly monitored in terms of cleanliness in the workplace to promote conducive environment for everybody. Same with the result in the table, it is implied that faculty and staff in Southway College of Technology has been practicing the operation called shine which means keep every part of the workplace clean.

Table 3.4 shows the overall mean of the 5S operation survey result under standardize in Southway College of Technology. Based on the table, standardize as one of the 5S operations got an overall mean of 3.49 which is describe as highly manifested. This result implied that the faculty and staff in Southway College of Technology is manifesting the three operations

namely

sort,

set,

and

shine

which

composed

standardize

operation. This result is comparable to the book released by Balbuena on 2005 titled “Standardized Management Guide” which says that the preparation of standard methods to the management of a team is highly needed. Thus, in preparing a standardized method the three operations such as sort, set,

and

shine

are

major

components

to

attain

the

objective

in

management.

Table 3.5 shows the overall mean of the 5S operation survey result under sustain in Southway College of Technology. Sustain got an overall mean of 3.64 which means highly manifested. With this result, the researchers could imply that the implementation of 5S operation in Southway College of Technology is indeed given importance because most of the respondents asserted that sustain is highly manifested in school’s workplace. Thus, sustain defines the discipline for employees to strictly follow the implemented 5S operation in the organization in obtaining the desired result.

Table 3.6 shows the summary of the 5S operation survey result in Southway College of Technology. It is shown in the table that sort has an overall mean of 3.47 which means highly manifested. Set got an overall mean of 3.48 which is also describe as highly manifested as well as shine describe as highly manifested with an overall mean of 3.52. Meanwhile, standardize sustain got an overall mean of 3.49 and 3,64, respectively which both describe as highly manifested. Based on the table 3.6, the grand mean of 5S operation in Southway College of Technology is 3.52 which shows favorable result and describe as highly manifested. This result implies that the implementation of 5S operation is clearly seen and

manifested

to

the

faculty

and

staff

in

Southway

College

of

Southway

College

of

Technology. The

implementation

of

5S

operation

in

Technology has been given importance because it shows favorable result which aligned with several studies conducted by different researchers around the globe. O’heocha (2000) confirmed that 5S operation is an effective

technique

that

can

improve

housekeeping,

environmental

performance, as well as safety standards in a systematic way. Another study affirmed that 5S is one of the strongest tools for enhancing the success factor of TQM implementation (Ho and Fung, 2002). Similarly, Pheng (2001) found that most of operating companies in Hong Kong has

successfully improved quality of product as well as increasing the working life underneath of 5S deployment. Therefore, based on the figures and result of studies mentioned above the researchers could imply that 5S operation is an effective tool that helped the management maintain the ethics and work environment of the employees conducive and feasible.

Table 3.7 shows the summary of the quality services in Southway College of Technology in terms of safety, sense of honorship, and efficiency. Based on the table above, it is clearly shown that safety and efficiency got and overall mean of 3.60 which is describe as excellent. Sense of honorship got an overall mean of 3.63 which also means excellent. The table above also shows the grand mean of the quality services in Southway College of Technology in terms of safety, sense of honorship, and efficiency is 3.61 which is describe as excellent. With this result, the researchers imply that the implementation and application of 5S operation in Southway College of Technology has a good effect to the faculty and staff quality services. This affirmation is in connection with the result of a study conducted by Warwood and Knowles (2004) which stated that the implementation of 5S operation is tended to depend on the stage of the 5S program. Ho (2003) also asserted that upon the

application of 5S operation in a certain company in Hong Kong, it has successfully improved the quality of product they are product. Hence, 5S operation should continually be given an importance knowing the good effects it gives to the company or institution and employees. This technique could also help in building a better work environment that promotes conducive and productive workers.
