“A Change for the Better” How can an ordinary man change his country for the better? This statement seems to be impossible. But yet it can be possible if the man himself will do its part to make the change. Presently, the issue of Charter Change was revived again. Charter Change or “chacha” in the Philippines refers to revising the current 1987 Constitution of the Philippines. There are many attempts by the previous presidents for Charter Change: former President Fidel V. Ramos proposed the changes in the constitution included a shift to a parliamentary system and the lifting of term limits of public officials. Former President Joseph Estrada also attempted even though it’s not actually changing but a constitutional correction for development. And now President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo the most solid attempt for charter change from democratic form of government to a parliamentary form of government. There are many arguments about this issue alone. Many personal views about its advantages and disadvantages to our country. But where should we really focus on? Others say we must not support charter change because the prime minister will have the absolute power and the freedom of what we are experiencing now will be cutoff. Others say we must support charter change for a change. At this moment this charter change issue is on the hot seat and still in the process. According to Nograles, “We are prepared to bend backward, bend forward or even sideward if necessary just to be able to find a win-win solution on how to resolve the impasse on the Charter change issue. We don’t want to reach a situation where we have an irresistible force moving against an immovable object, with this breakthrough in restoring amiable ties with the Senate, I am more optimistic that we can also achieve a consensus on the present deadlock on the Charter change issue,”. Changing the constitution of the Philippines is very crucial and difficult. They must breakdown to the people the details of this charter change and how can it help the country. So, how can an ordinary man change his country? Change starts from within. We want to stop corruption but still we can’t stop it even if we use force to destroy it. We can start the change from our own actions. Does our country really need this charter change? Or we just have to change our own individual bad attitudes, behavior and character for an internal to external change. This kind of change will revive our people and our country will be redeemed from the oppressions and failures. “The only permanent thing here on earth is CHANGE” -Anonymous
