Substances Elements Is a substance that is made up of atoms that are alike.  Compound Is a substance in which the atoms of two or more elements are chemically combined in a fixed proportion. 

Mixtures Heterogeneous Mixture in which different materials remain distinct. 

Homogeneous Mixture that remains constantly and uniformly mixed and has particles that are so small that tey cannot be seen with microscope. 

Physical Any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the identity of a substance. 

A change in size, shape or state of matter in which the identity of the substance remains the same is called a physical change.

Chemical Any characteristic of a material that you can observe that produces one or more new substances. A change of one substance to another is called a chemical change. Examples: A release of energy, heat, cooling, a formation of bubbles. 

Properties of Matter

Mass is not gained or lost during any chemical change.
