Substances Elements Is a substance that is made up of atoms that are alike. Compound Is a substance in which the atoms of two or more elements are chemically combined in a fixed proportion.
{
Mixtures Heterogeneous Mixture in which different materials remain distinct.
Suspensions Colloids
Homogeneous Mixture that remains constantly and uniformly mixed and has particles that are so small that tey cannot be seen with microscope.

S. 2
{
Physical Any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the identity of a substance.
A change in size, shape or state of matter in which the identity of the substance remains the same is called a physical change.
{
Chemical Any characteristic of a material that you can observe that produces one or more new substances. A change of one substance to another is called a chemical change. Examples: A release of energy, heat, cooling, a formation of bubbles.
Properties of Matter
Mass is not gained or lost during any chemical change.
