Celia Mara may have a dark voice and a serious message but Santa Rebeldia is an inherently fun album, for the most part at least. Growing up in Minas Gerias amidst the drums of Afro-Brazilian religion Candomble, eerie Christian chants and melancholic local folklore has clearly had an influenced on Celia and her music bears the proof. She often goes under the moniker ‘bastardista’, the music being her bastard offspring. On the track ‘Nana Buruke’ gospel choruses rub up against lingering guitar riffs, while on ‘Ilegal da Geladeria’ it’s computer effects and the wonderfully Brazilian sound of the cuica.

JUNGLE'S TEAM REVIEWS THE ELITE SQUAD DVD, SKANK, CELIA MARA, WATCHA CLAN AND MORE Elite Squad Words: Sara Puerta Label: Optimum +++ After winning a Golden Bear at the last Berlin Film Festival, José Padilha's Elite Squad went on to spark controversy over the way it depicted drug trafficking and violence in Rio. In the UK, the movie debuted last August and will be launched on DVD on the 19th. Extras include an exclusive interview with the director. Based on the novel Elite Squad, written by ex-police officers André Batista and Rodrigo Pimental, the film reveals the ins and outs of drug trafficking in Rio de Janeiro. Unlike City of God, Elite Squad depicts the day to day routine from the point of view of a captain of the BOPE, the Special Police Operations Battalion of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police. There was also some stir due to the fact the move was widely bootlegged even before it reach the screens in Brasil, which makes one wonder if the suggested retail price - £19.90 - isn't a bit too much. The irreverant tone of the compositions is also explicit in the theatrical way in which Celia sings: some verses seem more spoken than sung. Whilst her earlier work was always characterised by a fusion of Latin rhythms, funk and samba, on Santa Rebeldia repetitive electronic beats reign supreme. Estandarte - Skank Words: Fernando Duarte Label: Sony / BMG +++ The pun is too tempting for a band famous for songs with football references: Brasilian four-piece Skank misses some sitters in what could be an interesting album for its departure from the Britpopinspired previous works (Cosmotron and Carrossel). In theory, the idea of flirting with an electro-rock atmosphere sounds fresh, but in practice it stumbles with lyrics much more suited to the usual pop formula, as well as the scatting made simultaneously so famous and irritatingly overused by singer and lead guitarist Samuel Rosa - as anyone who remembers Skank's assassination of The Police's Wrapped Around Your Finger will remember. There are exceptions, though: 'Para-Raio' and 'Canção Áspera' and 'Notícias do Submundo' are great songs in which the band sounds fresh and spontaneous as Cristiano Ronaldo in his heyday. But three tracks out of 12 is a very low score…

If you thought that the most progressive “Nu Brazilian” music was still being hatched in the soundlabs of Sao Paulo, guess again, because one of the best new “Brazilian” records to come around this year is actually from Austria. That’s right, Austria, land of Mozart, Strauss and, um, Falco. But Brazilian transplant Celia Mara builds a bridge between her homeland’s lush tropical sounds and chilly Teutontic electronica. Singing mostly in Portuguese, her big voice rides MPB—samba bossa nova, forro—and even tango rhythms over jazzy and dubby electronic breakbeats (programmed and arranged by Geri Schuller and Michael Kreiner). The result is Bastardista, her fourth album chock full of sophisticated, mostly downtempo chillout tracks that Bebel Gilberto would kill for. Standout tracks include “Jade,” “Folha” and “Cacador de Almas.”

A truly enchanting album from Algerian exile Souad Massi justified her esteemed place in the global music canon but she blew everyone away with an amazing duet with Daby Balde. Essential stuff. Baaba Maal and Africa 05 The year started with great hopes that finally world aid, trade, HIV and debt relief would begin to release their crushing dead hand from Africa and at the same time there was a conscious effort by a huge number of cultural institutions to focus on the many positive things happening on the continent. Bob Geldof’s failure to support African musicians left a bad taste in many people’s mouths but no one showed more dignity and commitment than Baaba Maal. Whether talking about the problems or putting on fantastic concerts, Baaba Maal got it right in every way.

You wouldn’t expect some of the best nu-Brazilian music to be coming out of Austria. But this is where multi-talented musician Celia Mara indulges her Brazilian heritage by creating a mix of electronic and acoustic melodies. When recording, Mara is nearly a one-woman show — she composes, sings, plays guitar and arranges her own songs. Her third album “Bastardista,” released in May, received worldwide acclaim and remained in the world music charts for three months. On tour Mara fronts a four-person band with one American and two Austrian musicians providing back-up vocals, as well as live keys, bass and drums. Here Mara is in her element. Her vocal range is remarkable and her music creates a beautifully uplifting atmosphere. And of course, the show comes with all the flair you would expect from a Brazilian.

Mara’s performance is part of Nazim Nadirov’s “Ethnotronica” series. The events will bring to Moscow some of the best ethno-electronic performers from around the world, including both unknown and established artists. Celia Mara spices up Molodaya Gvardiya from 9 p. m. on November 4. Tickets are 707-1415 rubles at the door.
