Like the band’ s sublime Liberatio n Blue debut el Mo mento Descuidado in 2004, this is an acoustically textured collection f eaturing Church o ldies and mo re recently recorded wo rk as well as some brand new co mpo sitions. Casual f ollo wers of The Church who were intrigued by the reworkings o f U nguarded Moment and U nder The Milky Way will be less f amiliar with this material but would be well advised to take the plunge, f o r unlike the somewhat narrower conf ines o f its predecesso r,

E l Mo mento S iguiente was developed over a longer perio d and j o yously o f fers its riches with even greater variety in style and detail. C ase in po int the co lo urf ul bo ogie- woo gie piano ( played by guitar maestro Peter Koppes) which drives the f o rmerly staccato guitar attack o f Reptile f rom 1988 wo rld- beating album, S tarfish, there is a loo seness in approach here ( not to mention vo calist S teve Kilbey’ s excited and rare falsetto urgings during the o utro ) which is as surprising as it is welco me. The o ther track reworked fro m S tarfish is wo rth the price o f admission alone; yes, it wo uld be exceedingly dif f icult to be disappo inted by any version o f No rth S o uth, E ast & West but this lilting and go rgeo usly melancho lic dual-aco ustic versio n floats and melts and seduces and will beguile all who hear it. To emphasise a f resh and invigo rated approach ( the band is go ing thro ugh the mo st extraordinary creative burst) Kilbey shares vo cal duties with talented so ngstress Inga Lilj estro m on Pure C hance f ro m 2006’ s U ninvited, Like the Clo uds and the three new co mpo sitions sit co mf o rtably beside f o rmer glories. Indeed, Kilbey’ s vocal delivery has never been better; it is perf ectly evident this rich vein o f f orm is destined to co ntinue f or so me time yet. A nd, adding to the instrumental f lavo urs, cellist S o phie Glasso n so o thes It’s No Reason ( a long lost single f ro m ano ther age) and violinist A manda Bro wn jo ins her to give 1994’ s Two Places A t Once some sweetly mo urnful to nes and extra resonance. Fro m the bass drum throb which acco mpanies exquisite f lamenco f lo urishes on the Ko ppes’ tune A ppalatia to the hypno tic E asternf lavo ured rewo rking of the fo rmerly bullish Tantaliz ed ( f ro m the cult classic Heyday album) , there is well o ver an ho ur’ s worth of rich C hurch pickings here, more than enough to satisf y both ardent f o llo wer and curious listener alike. Reward yo urself with yet another multifario us triumph f ro m The Church.
