Global Warming Do you feel that this summer is hotter that any other summers before? Or, do you feel that the climate is changing hesitantly? All of it is because of global warming. Global warming is an issue that we often hear in newspaper, television, or radio recently. According to Wikipedia Free Encyclopedia, Global warming refers to the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation. Global warming growing constantly along the human history and now it becomes the concern of many countries in the world. Researchers believed that human activity is ‘likely’ the main cause of global warming. In 2001, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had found that human activities take the greatest part to create the global warming. The burning of fossil fuel, which is usually used in industry, has caused the concentration of carbon dioxide and methane gasses, which cause green house effect, in the atmosphere increased. IPCC gives a prediction about the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that by the year of 2100 it will be raise ranging from 541 to 970 parts per million (ppm) by volume, contrasting with the present number that reaches 383 ppm,. The raising number is the result of the large number of factories and motor vehicles emission, air condition usage, agriculture and also deforestation. The reducing of forests in the world makes the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere worse. Forests could reduce it because they need it for photosynthetic process. Global warming has caused the temperature of the earth raising. It means the earth becomes hotter and hotter than before. The climate panel research had predicted that the temperature of the earth will rise between 3-5 and 8 degrees of Fahrenheit, if the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere reaches twice the level of 1750. Consequently,
many researches predicted that there will be many “new and old” endemic diseases come out, such as malaria, dengue, diarrhea, etc. Beside that, the sea level will rose between 18 and 59 cm because of the melting ice in the Earth poles. The raising of sea levels will endanger the people who live in the coastal area. In the coastal of East Java, many villages are threatened by the danger of the big waves. For example, Kenjeran beach, Popoh Tulungagung beach, and Ngelinyep Malang beach are threatened by the danger of high tide in the third week of this May. In addition, climate changes extremely as a result of global warming. In Indonesia, the rainy season becomes shorter, while dry season becomes longer. Consequently, many farmers have lost their crop because the rainy season occur only a short time. If it happens continuously, surely the people will be lack of food.
Global warming has happened. It will become worse and worse, if only we do nothing. What we should do now is realizing that Earth is a place where we live, and we must keep it. Changing our behavior on the way we use the energy and treat the Earth better than before are one ways. Or, we can let the earth becomes hotter and hotter, and then let it explodes into pieces.
