C. EXTENSION (a) Transfer of Technology (2002 to 2007) 1. Opportunities for taking up income generating activities, record keeping for SHG women. 2. Vermicomposting through demonstration, training and use of vermicompost in Horticulture and field crops. 3. IPM cotton through First Line Demonstration, highlighting Bhendi trap crop, seed treatment with Imidacloprid, trico cards, use of Neem oil, use of NPV and Pheromone traps. 4. Under the programme ‘Whole Farm Demonstration” (WFDP) selected farmers belong to different categories (small, medium and large) with their farmers Farm Management Extension activities concerned to farm planning attended to assist the farmer in all-round development of primary objective of the objectives of this programme are, 1. To encourage the farmers to take up improved crop cultivation practice. 2. To assist farmers to develop other subsidiary enterprises (dairy, sericulture, poultry, etc.). 3. To educate farmers on farm, account keeping for making rational decision at farm level. The bench mark year information for the individual farmer used to develop suitable crop plans for all seasons in the year, three crop plans were implemented with the assistance of Assistant Professor working at taluk level and farmer himself. At different stages of crops where the farmers experience problems concern Subject Matter Specialists help was taken to give appropriate solutions. Immediately, after the harvest of crops costs and returns for all crops were analyzed and results were used to educate the farmers on taking suitable decisions at farm level for effective use of resources. One farmer identified under Whole Farm Demonstration. Goolappa Akki of Yemmetti, Kalghatagi taluk, who is having 14 acres of land, 10 acres irrigated and 4 acres rainfed have been guided regarding “Integrated Farming System”. They have been introduced 1. Sweet sorghum – high fodder yielding variety 2. Low cost inputs cropping such as Trichoderma seed treatment, IPM in cotton (Seed treatment, Bhendi crop, NPV, Tricocards) through Demonstrations. 3. High yielding Groundnut varieties JL-24 and GPBD-4, 106, etc. In Groundnut treatment like PGPR-1, PGPR-2 Post harvesting weedicide, skip method, etc. 4. Introduction of African tall fodder maize. 5. Phule Yashoda varieties of Maize introduced.

6. Horticulture components like DHB-1 & 2 Sapota. 7. forestry component DTS-1 Tamarind 8. Fish culture 9. Vermicomposting Brick method and Pit method-by-method demonstration and its use in Horticulture and field crops. 10. Introduction of Azola units and feeding schedule for dairy, fishery and poultry birds. 11. Paddy new varieties of Mugad introduced. 12. Gypsum application in Groundnut to increase yield in Groundnut. 13. Introduced Sorghum variety 6 & 2 and organized field day. 14. Gave training on enrichment of dry fodder and cattle feed preparation through demonstration. 15. Field day of IPM cotton at Goolappa Akki’s field. 16. Farmwomen day conducted at Whole Farm Demonstrator field of Akki. 17. Visit to Field days at B. Gudihal neighbouring village, ARS, Hebballi Farm, Krishimela, UAS, Dharwad and Horticulture National Seminar at UAS, Dharwad. 18. Introduction of Ginnigrass and Fodder Sorghum SSV-74. 19. Introduction of wilt resistant variety Maruti at the bunds in Paddy cultivation.

SUMMARY AND SUCCESS STORY OF WHOLE FARM DEMONSTRATION INTEGRATED FARMING SYSTEM DEMONSTRATIONS Integrated Farming System activities were in the fields of Gulappa s. Akki of village, Yemmetti, Kalghatagi taluk during 2003. The farmer was having 14 acres of land holding with bore well irrigation facilities at Bench mark year (before 2003). The farmer was growing field crops like Paddy, Maize, Chilli, Sorghum and Soybean. He was also maintaining dairy with few buffaloes. Further, he was having mango plantations. After the initiations he was introduced to the latest technologies in crops productions including high yielding varieties and hybrids. Sapota (DSH-1 & 2) as a Horticulture fruit component was introduced in 2 acres area.

Further, he was

encouraged to strengthen his dairy with introduction of Murra buffaloes and

cultivation of fodder crops (Jowar SSV-74, S.A. Maize and grasses). Preparation of balance cattle feed were also introduced.

During subsequent 2nd and 3rd years

Vermicomposting production Unit (4 Units) were started to increase the soil fertility. Azola production as a supplementary feed to dairy animals was also introduced. Fish culture was also initiated during the beginning of 3rd year in the existing farm pond which has started yielding recently. In field crops seed production activities were initiated (Ex. GPBD-4 in Groundnut). Farm forestry activities with plantation of teak and other forestry species were planted on the bunds. With results of above all activities at the end of 3 rd year of study the economic parameters indicated that the net income of the farmer was increased to 66.08, 113.88 and 162.16 per cent respectively during I, II and III years as compared to bench mark year. Further, the BC ratio was also increased from 1.19 to 2.41 per cent at the end of 3rd year.
