Carnival Parade in Rio 2008 February 4th and 5th

Hi, Subhash You asked me about Carnival. Well, here are some pictures of the parade held on Sunday and Monday nights in Rio de Janeiro. In Rio, there are 12 big Samba Schools. There are other samba schools that every year try to enter this selected group. They parade in front of thousands of people in these two days. They have different themes and creativity runs wild. They have to present the theme through the costumes and cars. Some cars are two-to-three stories high and are delicately produced. Some of the Samba Schools have more than five thousand participants. They are normally from very poor regions of the city and the samba schools have some social work related to these communities. They work all year around to prepare everything in order to parade for 80 minutes when they will be judged according to some criteria: harmony, theme, best samba school (as a whole), song, “bateria” (could be considered the orchestra), and so on. On Wednesday, the winner is known after the presentation of the grades. Many people suffer and the city stands still till it is over. Ah, every year the two best of Group A come to the Special Group while the two worst from the Special Group go down to Group A. So… a lot of rivalry, a lot of protests, crying, some fighting and joy is involved in the presentation of the winner. All over the city, in fact the country, people gather in the streets to dance all day long and all night long, having fun and enjoying life at fullest. Then, the year can finally start…Well, we are Brazilian! There are some historical and religious foundations for all this party. I hope you like these pictures I grabbed from the web. They are not from one specific Samba School; in fact it is a mixture of the ones I found most pretty. Enjoy. Claudia Moema

Yes, this is a moving 70m ski ramp with a skier performing along the 800m of the Sambadrome!

This is the same car from the previous photo. It represents that from water comes life.

I hope you liked. Bye. Claudia Moema
