ow! This Thanksgiving we here at Canvas have had so much to be thankful for. Outside of our normal prayers for health, family, and spiritual renewal, this year has been exceedingly bountiful with numerous blessings.

“Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours.” -Psalm 128:1-3

This month, we celebrate the release of our 6th & 7th issues featuring two notable local spiritual leaders, Reverend Jawanza Colvin of Olivet Institutional Baptist and Dr. Darrell Scott of New Spirit Revival Center. We’re well on our way to completing our first year! We also celebrate our recent move into our own new downtown office space complete with photography studio. We look forward to partnering with a number of talented local photographers and designers, and bringing you the best that creative Cleveland has to offer. Lastly, we celebrate the coming of a new year and the exciting partnerships and collabos we have planned with various social, civic, and community organizations throughout the city. Stay tuned for 2010! This issue would not be possible without most importantly our Creator, Mom and Dad, the Canvas Magazine staff, and our unbelieveable advertisers. See you in February! Three things that you notice in a man? His eyes, clothes, and swagger. Ladies will understand when I say, “Some men just have that ‘something’ about them when they walk/talk...It’s more than confidence.” What are some turnoffs? What are some turn-ons? Turn-off’s are lies, whiners, and fastmovers. Turn-on’s are a true gentleman, true listener, and an intellectual mind.

corporate sales executive Bio: Native of Los Angeles, and big sports fan Age: 42 Status: Single Location: Shaker

What’s the best way for a guy to introduce himself in public? Walk up and say hello, start a conversation about anything. I just don’t want the full court press when you don’t know anything about me. What’s the worst experience you have had with the opposite sex? I recently met a man for coffee and the whole time he talked about how pretty my legs were and how he’d watched me walk from across the street...etc...YUK!! He told me where his mind was - I wanted that 45 minutes of my life back.. What’s your idea of a perfect first date? A perfect date for me would be dinner and going to see a play. Along with all of my turn-on’s.

BRAVO written by Andre Cisco II

I

f you’ve been to a Cleveland Cavaliers game or listened to Z107.9 lately you’ve probably heard the Cleveland rendition of Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind.” The mastermind behind this project that has been generating a lot of local buzz is none other than Cleveland native and hip-hop veteran, Bravo. He says the track, “Terminal State of Mind,” came about through a request from Cavs’ DJ Steph Floss. “He called me and said he needed an arena version for the Cavs’ to come out to when he DJ’s the home games,” mentioned Bravo. “We pretty much had the same vision on what it had to be and Ashley Norelle was a unanamous decision [for the hook]. Ashley came in and absolutely killed it!”

words gabe crenshaw

Though “Terminal” has been his biggest feature in the area to date, Bravo first broke on to the national scene when he was featured in Source Magazine’s “Unsigned Hype” in 2000. Since that time Bravo has worked with many notable artists including Krayzie Bone and Al Fatz. Most recently, he received an Ohio Hip Hop Award for his mixtape “Before the Standing Ovation.” Bravo is currently working on several projects including an upcoming mixtape with DJ Knyce entitled “He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper” as well as his next album, The Standing Ovation EP. ollege students, Jessica & Jennifer Macklin, started creating personalized gifts and arrangements for various friends and family members with the mantra that “no two people are alike, not even twins.” Little did they know that through word of mouth alone their hobby would grow into a thriving company. Their clients have included Kent State, AT&T, Nestle, SS&G Accounting, and Universal American among others.

Inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of their father, Terry Macklin (Macklin Event Centre), the twins have learned to juggle their busy grad school schedules and personal lives to develop a unique business model which prides itself on professionalism and making their clients comfortable. Clients usually contact the Tymes2 team with the interests and characteristics of the intended gift recipient. From there, Jen & Jess collaborate to create handcrafted, custom themed gift designs with a personal touch. Tears of joy and general excitement tend to be a regular part of the Tymes2 gifting program. To find out more about the twins and Tymes2 Collection, be sure to contact them through the Macklin Event Centre in Solon, OH at (440) 519-0265.

owadays if people discover that you don’t have a Facebook account, it may bring about a look of concern or two. With modern day shifts in culture and technology, today’s spiritual leaders are not using the same approach that they used 20 years ago to reach the masses. Dr. Darrell Scott and the New Spirit Revival Center are adding contemporary methods to their repertoire to create fresh mediums for sharing the good news with people everywhere.

Talk about initiatives, programs, radio, the tools you use for outreach. Operation Recovery, started by my wife is geared toward the homeless. We go out to the street and give food and clothes every weekend in the trenches and minister the word of God.

Tell us about yourself. I was born and raised on the east side of Cleveland. In 1982, I got saved in Christ Temple Apostolic. In 1994, my wife and I stepped out and started our church as tenants here at the civic center. The church grew, we ended up owning and renovating the building and this is where we are now.

What’s your opinion of the local Christian community’s response to the recent serial killings here in Cleveland? I believe we bear a measure of indirect responsibility for those serial killings. Most people will disagree with me. We get so caught up in our wonderfulness that none of us had a message that we could of preached to the guy that would have touched something inside of him and change him. Now, we jump up afterwards and say we’re praying for the families and for the community. It’s good to pray for those that are bereaved, but I wish we could have been more proactive.

What would you like to see in 2010 within Cleveland’s Christian community and spiritual leaders? The agenda should be spiritual reform; if people become productive citizens of the kingdom of God then they’ll become productive citizens of the city of Cleveland. The church is too reactionary we need to be proactive. If we change people, then the circumstances will change.

What’s next for NSRC? We recently bought a new church in Akron. We’re going to continue to expand Radio 1000 as well as continue the Civic Banquet Event Center, office rental, and daycare. In looking at the work of Otis Moss Jr. and his predecessor Rev. Odie Hoover, how do you plan to continue the legacy of Olivet Institutional Baptist? One of the areas of focus, I have put on our ministry here is the mission of outreach. So often churches are so concerned with what is going on in their four walls that they fail to realize the mission Now under the new direction of Jawanza of Jesus Christ and be an example and witColvin, Olivet Institutional is reaching out- ness to the world. side its walls to reconnect with the people For us, our goal is to get outside of our of Cleveland. walls, which is a part of our legacy here at Tell us about yourself. Olivet Institutional Baptist Church has long been a staple of guidance in the Cleveland area through its historic civil rights tradition and involvement in social justice.

Why Cleveland? Why Olivet Institutional? Olivet first became familiar to me while at Morehouse where Reverend Dr. Otis Moss was the chairman of the board of trustees. I became aware of its historic civil rights tradition and involvement in social justice.

What should we have asked you? Why? Why should someone come to Olivet? I see myself as an intergenerational pastor. I am able to relate to people in all age ranges. I think anybody that comes to Olivet will be touched in unique ways and will see every generation represented.

I thought about my own ministry and ministering at Olivet. Being in a place like Cleveland was just a natural product of my wanting to be involved in social action, outreach, and the tradition of a great church like Olivet.

Olivet is a family church. Not meaning specific families, but that it has a family atmosphere. It’s a place where single moms, couples, singles, and young people can worship God quietly, fervently, or worship by standing up, shouting, and giving God glory. 23
