Candlelight or 4-point Star This block has fewer pieces then the last couple of blocks. It will introduce another technique to the Sampler quilt. It’s really a 4-patch block with 5 points to line up. Cutting and piecing this block the traditional way is a bit tricky. So, I’ve devised an easier way that I think you might just enjoy. Remember to use 1/4” seam allowance.

Follow these steps 1. Choose three different fabrics that you feel will work together in the block. 2. You will need these pieces: a.

4 squares at 5 1/2” of the light fabric

b.

2 square at 5” of the medium light fabric

c.

2 squares at 5” of the dark fabric

3. Take the 5 1/2” squares, light fabric, and cut them in half diagonally as show here.

4. Take the other four fabric squares and fold them with wrong sides facing as shown here. You should be looking at the right side of the fabric.

5. To assemble each block, place the pieces on the table and fit together carefully. You might want to pin these before sewing. a. Take one light triangle, right side facing up and place it in front of you as shown.

b. Take one of the folded squares and place it on the light triangle as shown.

The folded edge is to your left. Slide it down about a 1/4” from the top for seam allowance when all four are sewn together. c. Take another light triangle, wrong side facing up and place it on top sandwiching the folded square as shown.

Now check that they are correct. Both light fabrics right sides should be facing each other; the folder fabric should have its wrong sides facing each other. d. Sew 1/4” from the edge down the long side of the triangle as shown here.

6. Open and iron; light fabric should be a square with the other fabric angled down the center as shown here.

Repeat these steps for the other three squares. 7. Take the 4 ironed squares and place them on the table as shown.

8. Take the top squares and place them together with right sides facing and check that the color fabric points line up. You might want to pin before sewing. Sew 1/4" from edge. Do the same for the bottom two.

Open and iron the seams in opposite directions. 9. Fold the top over onto the bottom with right sides facing and line up the center point and the two color fabric points and pin. Then sew together. Congratulations, you have a Candlelight block!
