About Jocelyn Benson
The Race: The Office of Secretary of State in Michigan has been in Republican control for the past 16 years.
Jocelyn is one of the leading election law experts and educators in the state of Michigan. She is a nationally recognized educator, attorney, and voter advocate dedicated to promoting access and protecting the integrity of the election process.
The current occupant is term limited and there are currently four Republicans vying for the GOP nomination in 2010. Jocelyn is the only Democrat in the race at this time. Michigan Democrats are heading into 2010 with two very successful cycles in 08’ and 06’. Jocelyn is running a grassroots campaign – a ground breaking effort that unlike any other waged in Michigan for this position. The campaign is well on its way to the goal of visiting all 83 counties by September 2009. By August 2010 Jocelyn will visit all counties at least three times. But the fall of 2009, every county will have at least one coordinator to help ensure that citizens in every county in the state are involved in the campaign. The second primary goal of the campaign is to raise the funds necessary to build a winning campaign. This is being achieved through an aggressive fundraising strategy that combines traditional fundraising strategies and grassroots fundraising. In order to secure the nomination, the campaign must prove its ability to raise money to build a candidacy and campaign that is poised to win in November 2010. Jocelyn is dedicated to meeting and exceeding this expectation. The nomination will be decided in August 2010 based on the results of delegate voting at the MDP Convention – there is no statewide primary for the position.
Jocelyn was raised by two special education teachers in Pittsburgh. She began her career working for the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama. By the time she left Alabama to pursue her Masters’ degree as a Marshall Scholar at Oxford University in the UK, she was fully committed to fighting to protect voting rights for all. In 2004, Jocelyn was tapped to help develop the first nationwide Election Protection Program for the DNC. She selected, recruited and training coordinators in over 21 states which resulted in over 17,000 election law lawyers protecting voters on Election Day 2004. Since 2004, Jocelyn has worked to oversee various election protection efforts in Michigan and in other states. In 2008, Jocelyn provided testimony on Capitol Hill concerning the illegal usage of foreclosure lists to stop voters at the polls. Currently, Jocelyn is a fulltime Assistant Professor of Law at Wayne State University in Detroit. Her upcoming book on best practices for Secretaries of State, Democracy and the Secretary of State, will be out later this year. She is also the founder of the Richard Austin Center of Election Law and Administration. She lives in Detroit with her husband, Ryan Friedrichs.
