A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CAFÉ, ANNO 1917 A very important part of the heritage of the Café des Artistes is the fact that artists lived and worked in virtually all of the buildings on our block. They were a highly colorful and social group, and the Café served as a meeting place for their creative efforts, offering reasonably priced food flavored with good conversation. The Café was fashioned after the English Ordinary, a cozy bistro with a limited menu based on foods available at market. While the bistros of France, trattorias of Italy, beisls of Vienna and tavernas of Greece - all equivalents of the Ordinary - flourish to this day, the style never became popular in the United States. Tradition is often just a form of conspiracy to keep the future from happening, but adapting this oldfashioned concept to the current market has served the Café well. It isn’t a lofty grande cuisine served at the Café, nor its many strange and faddish offshoots, but a cuisine with the flavor and texture of a neighborhood restaurant where good middle-class food, typical French Sunday dinners, would be rounded out by some “If only I could have…” type dishes. We look forward to many memorable meals with you.

SCOTCH & SINGLE MALTS
THE MURALS AND HOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY Howard Chandler Christy, who painted the murals featured in the Café des Artistes, was a celebrity during his two careers: as an illustrator (1895-1920) and as a portrait painter (1920-1952). He was among the leading illustrators in demand by the most popular periodicals in the early part of the 20th century. Around that time, Christy originated the Christy girl, who was the sporty American ideal after the blousy Gibson girl of the previous generation. There are six murals of wood nymphs painted by Christy in the Café des Artistes. The first group was completed in 1934 and the second in 1942. The names of the paintings are The Parrot Girl , The Swing Girl , Ponce de Leon , Fall , Spring , and The Fountain of Youth.
