Bibliographic databases Many large, commercial databases are free to members of UK higher and further education institutions, if your library has paid a subscription. You may need an ATHENS username and password from your library.

COPAC http://copac.ac.uk/ COPAC is a freely available bibliographic catalogue of 24 of the major university research libraries in the UK and Ireland, plus the British Library, National Library of Wales and the National Library of Scotland.

ISI Web of Knowledge Service for UK Education http://wok.mimas.ac.uk/ Web of Knowledge has several large databases of interest to economics and business researchers, including the Social Sciences Citation Index; a large bibliographic database of a wide range of journals, the Journal Citation Report; which provides statistical data on the relative importance of journals within a subject area and ISI Proceedings, an index of social science related conferences.

Zetoc: Electronic Table of Contents from the British Library http://zetoc.mimas.ac.uk/ Zetoc provides access to the British Library’s Electronic Table of Contents of around 20,000 current journals and around 16,000 conference proceedings published per year. It’s well worth signing up for the free email alerting service, which will then email you details of new publications in your subject area as they appear.

Coverage includes marketing, management, economics, finance and accounting. The database also includes country economic reports from the EIU, Global Insight, ICON Group and Country Watch. Institutional subscription required.

Hospitality and Tourism Complete http://www.epnet.com/thisTopic.php?marketID=1&topicID=418 From EBSCO Information services, this database covers scholarly research and industry news relating to all areas of hospitality and tourism, from 1965 onwards. There is full text for more than 200 publications, including periodicals, company reports and books. Sources are both domestic and international. Institutional subscription required.

Leisure Tourism Database http://www.leisuretourism.com / Produced by CABI Publishing; this database is a valuable current awareness and research tool; covering leisure, recreation, tourism and hospitality. Contents include abstracts and full text articles, news, spotlights, reports and analyses of specific subjects. All articles are archived and fully referenced. Institutional subscription required.

It offers information and links to management thinkers, models, theories, organisational behaviour, group dynamics, training and more. Very good for business students who are beginning their research.

FOR TOURISM CIA World Factbook http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/ This site provides a detailed profile of each country, covering geography, people, government, economy, communications, transportation, military and transnational issues. There are maps of each country and larger areas. The site also has a listing of selected international environmental agreements. Both the current and previous Factbooks are available for download as a zip file.

Journals FOR BUSINESS People Management http://www.peoplemanagement.co.uk/pm/ This free online journal is produced by the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development). It features the latest developments in human resource management, with articles written in a clear and accessible style. A popular site with Intute: Social Science users.

EIU Executive Briefing http://eb.eiu.com/ EIU Executive Briefing is a service from the Economist Intelligence Unit, the result of collaboration between Harvard Business School Publishing and the Economist. This site offers access to Harvard Business School Publishing’s comprehensive collection of management literature, management articles from Economist Group publications such as The Economist, and a channel featuring management information from other leading sources such as consulting firms and leading business schools. The homepage of the site is available free, and enables users to view headlines and selected articles, access to the full site requires a subscription.

FOR TOURISM Journal of Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism Education (JoHLSTE) http://www.hlst.heacademy.ac.uk/johlste/ This is a freely available, peer reviewed, international electronic journal from the Higher Education Academy Network for Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism. FOR TOURISM Europa: Enterprise: Publications by Theme: Tourism http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/library/lib-tourism/ A list of tourism publications from the European Commission categorised into guides, studies, conference proceedings, statistics and projects. Most of the documents are available in English as well as several other languages, and many are available to download online, some are also available in summary format.

It covers research strategies and designs; interviewing, software; qualitative versus quantitative research; methods such as focus groups; analysing and writing up the research. FOR TOURISM Town and Tourists http://bllearning.co.uk/live/text/town/ From the British Library’s Texts in Context series, this selection explores how towns become tourist attractions; focusing primarily on Lyme Regis and the Peak District. Texts from a particular time period can be selected, including poetry, guidebooks, catalogues and satires. Kompass http://www.kompass.com/ Kompass is a trade directory, which has information on 1.7 million companies and 23 million key product references in over 70 countries. Some information is available free of charge and the rest is available on a paid access (time based subscriptions and pay per view credit units).

National Statistics Online http://www.statistics.gov.uk/ A must-view website. It offers summaries, reports and detailed data on Britain’s economy, population and society at national and local level, many available free of charge.

FOR TOURISM National Statistics: Transport, Travel and Tourism http://www.statistics.gov.uk/CCI/nscl.asp?ID=8141&x=10&y=7 Government data produced to high official standards as set out in the Official Statistics Code of Practice. Coverage within this section includes business tourism, domestic tourism, overseas tourism, visitor expenditure, disability and transport and transport finance and expenditure.

Find background information on UK tourism, inbound and domestic tourism trends by country and region, the latest monthly data, statistics and surveys on visitor attractions, accommodation, day visits, business tourism facts, and employment in tourism. London School of Economics: Business History Unit http://www.lse.ac.uk/collections/BHU/ This is just one of many top research centres at LSE. Considering the current popularity of business history, we thought it deserved a mention.

FOR TOURISM Christel DeHaan Tourism and Travel Research Institute (TTRI) http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/ttri/ The TTRI is a research and teaching unit based at Nottingham University Business School. Its mission is to undertake quality research and provide research led teaching which will contribute to government and business policy formation. The site contains information about the Institute, a section on postgraduate study opportunities, details of research and publications and access to full text research articles.

World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) http://www.wttc.org/ The WTTC is a research body and forum for the private sector of the worldwide travel and tourism industry. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of the industry in terms of employment and economic benefits. The site contains information on the organisation and its members, regional programmes, country and regional reports which include very current tourism statistics, and a ‘Competitiveness Monitor’ databank, which contains information on a range of countries indicating their competitiveness in terms of economic development, price, infrastructure, environment, technology and social development.

Government bodies Public services and government information online.

FOR BUSINESS Direct.Gov http://www.direct.gov.uk/ Direct.Gov is the official Internet gateway to UK government information for the British public and forms part of the UK’s eGovernment initiative, to deliver public services directly via the Internet. A huge site, but divided into sections and with plenty of information relating to business.

Companies House http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/ Companies House is responsible for company registration in Great Britain. It also has a key role in providing information about British companies. As well as containing searchable details of companies, the site has surveys and links to related sites. Basic company information is free, but other data has to be paid for.

FOR TOURISM Department for Culture, Media and Sport: Tourism http://www.culture.gov.uk/tourism/ A number of government reports are available for downloading in full text. Statistics, news and a wealth of information about tourism policy matters relating to the UK are accessible from the site.

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Tourism Programme http://www.uneptie.org/pc/tourism/ This site provides substantive and balanced information on sustainable tourism and ecotourism, with relevant links throughout the text. In addition, guidance on best practice within the discipline is also provided, while abstracts for many of the publications are offered for sale.

FOR BUSINESS BBC Business http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/ This excellent site pulls together the BBC’s business output. It includes educational materials, television programmes, news, and a work and careers area.

Guardian Unlimited Business Latest http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/ This site belongs to the Guardian Newspaper and is a roundup of business news, mainly about the UK. Examples of subjects covered are house prices, unemployment figures, the euro, wealth surveys and company news.

FT.com http://news.ft.com/ The FT website offers daily highlights from the FT newspaper, including today’s top story and the most important story from Europe, Asia/Pacific and the Americas. Also contains a daily article on technology and a news in brief section which contains summaries of 15–20 stories.

FOR TOURISM Air and Business Travel News http://www.abtn.co.uk/ This is a weekly news review (updated every Monday) aimed at the UK aviation and tour operator industry as well as regular travellers. News headlines and summaries of topical issues are offered. JISCmail http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/ JISCmail provides tools for setting up and running email discussion lists and is free to members of the HE and FE community in the UK. There are a number of lists for business and tourism and you can often browse the archives of previous discussions. If there isn’t a list already, you can easily set one up yourself and invite others to join. Some examples:
