‘Burning a coin for the whole night’ There are two instances in the book where firing a coin has been suggested as an upaya. In both the cases the circumstances are similar and so is the purpose. The upaya is to take care of mangal-ashubh. [ 1 ] If Rahu is in the 8th and the person lives in a house with a ‘bhatti’ next to him , ‘bhatti’ either of a ‘bharbhooja’ or a ‘halwai’ , he is advised to throw a coin into the ‘bhatti’. { page # 674 ; 1952 ed OR Arun Sanhita page # 234 } A ‘bhatti’ is a mangal-ashubh. Now how does this upaya convert mangal-ashubh into mangalshubh? Mangal-subh

= surya + budh

Mangal-ashubh = surya + shani-{rahu swabhav} Or

= surya + mangal + budh { masnui constituents of shani-rahu swabhav}

The only way to convert the above equation into surya+budh will be to take mangal out of it. Since the ‘bhatti’ fire can not be eliminated or extinguished , there will have to be an alternative solution found. The alternative solution could be to use an agent which could absorb and assimilate fire { mangal}. The only agent which could assimilate and absorb fire without changing its character is the Sun. The Sun alone can absorb and assimilate all the fires of the world and not change its character. Hence throw a copper coin into the ‘bhatti’ . The coin is not to be taken out, it stays in the ‘bhatti’. Thus the Sun will continue absorbing and assimilating mangal{ fire } Once the mangal is absorbed and assimilated , the equation changes to : surya + budh = mangal-shubh [ 2 ] The second instance where firing a copper coin is suggested is : If rahu and the sun are together in the 8th house and the results of both of them are destroyed / adverse , in that case it is suggested that a copper coin should be fired for the whole night { at least 12 hours} and thrown into a river in the morning. None of the children should be around while the coin is being taken out for throwing otherwise they might be adversely effected. { Page # 822 ; 1952 ed OR Arun Sanhita page # 288 } The 8th house is associated with mangal and shani . Once again it is suspected that mangal has gone ashub and once it happens rahu goes belligerent . In this case not only the ‘ashubh

mangal ki aag’ is to be neutralized , even the sun has to be rescued. Therefore the coin has to be fired at least for the whole night , assuming that it is a sufficient time for the sun to absorb and assimilate the fire. The coin , now laden with inauspicious mangal and its ills, has to be carried for throwing into the river. { jokingly I call it radio-active coin}. Now coming to the reason why it is prohibited that no ‘bachche’ should be around while carrying the coin. Who will the Mars effect adversely? Its enemies : Mercury and Ketu. Well now you know why daughters { budh} and the sons{ ketu} have been advised to keep away from it. Some Lalkitabists interpret this upaya as ‘surya ko nasht karana ya danda dena’ “ you are "destroying" or (nashT kar rahe hain) or "punishing" Sun (copper) by burning him all night long.”. ‘Punishing’ for what reason? Is it the Sun’s fault that it is with Rahu ? Nor it is being destroyed by getting fired through the night. I am afraid that none of these { nashta karana or sazaa dena } is a rationale of this upaya. If either of them were true where was the necessity of a warning that none of the children should be around while the coin is being taken out for throwing into a river. This is the only upaya in the entire book where such a warning has been given. If the Sun was ‘nashta’ there was nothing to fear from a dead Sun and if you have the capability to punish some one ,would you be afraid of him? Bhooshan Priya
