Bureau of Oral Health Newsletter

FAMILY PHYSICIAN FALL CONFERENCE FEATURES FLUORIDE VARNISH A child will see their family physician an average of eight times before seeing a dentist for the first time. These eight visits are an excellent opportunity for a quick dental intervention. During regularly scheduled well-child care visits, family physicians can conduct an oral assessment, apply fluoride varnish, and give parents information on taking care of their child’s teeth. The goal is to educate, prevent, and identify dental problems starting as soon as the teeth erupt. This identification will allow for referral to a dentist and the establishment of a dental home. Without intervention in the medical office a dentist may not be consulted until a serious infection is already present. This September the Bureau of Oral Health and the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians will collaborate to provide a fluoride varnish workshop. MaryAnn Percy, Outreach Coordinator, will present information on the effectiveness and safety of using fluoride varnish in a medical office. A fun addition to the workshop will be the “hands on” approach that participants will have for learning to apply the fluoride varnish. Toward the end of the meeting, local children of all ages will join the group. Each participant will have the opportunity to place the fluoride varnish on a child. This approach will demonstrate the ease and speed with which fluoride varnish can be applied to any age child.

The application of fluoride varnish is a billable encounter for children with Medicaid benefits. Ruth Williams, Dental Program Education Coordinator for the Kansas Medical Assistance Program, will address the billing aspects of fluoride varnish in a medical office. Ruth will discuss appropriate billing codes and protocol for billing in various office settings. In addition to the varnish and Medicaid information there will be discussion on normal tooth eruption, conducting an oral screening, decay risk assessments, and education on tooth care for parents. Each participant will receive a folder filled with information related to all of the material presented at the workshop as well as additional fluoride varnish samples. The Bureau of Oral Health will also provide fluoride varnish education brochures for dispensing to parents and fluoride varnish posters to display in medical offices. The KAFP Fall CME Conference will be Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19 at the Safari Expedition Extraordinaire (SEE) in Salina. The fluoride varnish workshop will be held on Saturday, from 8:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Registration will be limited to 30 participants due to the character of the workshop. Registration and additional information is available at http://kafponline.org

VISUALIZING ORAL HEALTH IN KANSAS: AN INNOVATIVE WAY TO SHARE INFOMATION The Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation has announced an innovative video series designed to highlight what Kansas dental professionals are doing around the state to serve the dental needs of Kansans. “While highlighting dentistry, there is of course, the opportunity to reach more broadly into oral health and to talk about things that are going on outside the dental office,” said Greg Hill, Executive Director of the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation. “This obviously includes the Kansas Mission of Mercy, targeted programs to treat the elderly and other community partnerships that harness the charitable spirit of dental professionals in Kansas.”

While still in the planning stages, much of the work that has been publically released can be found by visiting the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation website at www.ksdentalfoundation.org and clicking on the link “Visualizing Oral Health in Kansas.” “The idea behind this project is to create and produce the video series and then allow interested agencies and service organizations post the video directly into their websites,” Hill said. The first release is scheduled for late July and will cover a series of oral health focus groups conducted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s Bureau of Oral Health.
