Forget Frodo—Ethan Gilsdorf guides readers through fantasy lands far more enchanting than anything you’ll find in Tolkien’s books. —Pagan Kennedy, New York Times Notable author Fantasy. Science fiction. Role-playing games.

by Wendy Harrington

“This is a delightful book—more fun than being a Dungeon Master to a group of high-level mages and thieves.”—A. J. Jacobs, New York Times best-selling author of The Know-It-All and The Year of Living Biblically

After playing Dungeons & Dragons religiously in the 1970s and 1980s, Ethan Gilsdorf went on to become a poet, teacher, and journalist. Based in Somerville, Massachusetts, he publishes travel, arts, and pop culture stories regularly in the New York Times, Boston Globe, and Christian Science Monitor, and has been published in other magazines and newspapers, including National Geographic Traveler, Psychology Today, and the Washington Post. He has also been a guest on talk radio as a fantasy and escapism expert. Follow Ethan’s adventures at www.ethangilsdorf.com. Cover design by Bret Kerr

“Witty, downright funny, poignant, honest and . . . well, wistful. Anyone who has ever embraced ‘escapism’ will understand, and those who haven’t taken that leap of imagination will want to after reading Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks. … Reading Ethan Gilsdorf’s tale conjured my own Dungeons & Dragons and fantasy experiences, vividly.” —R.A. Salvatore, New York Times best-selling author of The Dark Elf Trilogy, and lead storyteller of 38 Studios game company “A fun, quirky, and fresh perspective for those wanting to know more about the amazing world of gaming.” —David Brin, winner of the Nebula, Hugo, and Locus Awards, and author of The Postman, Kiln People, and The Transparent Society “Ethan Gilsdorf’s quest for himself leads through the fantasy world of millions of gamers in a breathless adventure/quest/memoir that is uniquely contemporary. This is at once a primer on the world of gaming, a self-help manual, and a wistful meditation on the passing of real time in a (nearly) virtual world.” —Andrei Codrescu, NPR commentator and author of The Posthuman Dada Guide “An orcs-and-all journey through geekdom, told with affection for every elf, wizard, and Dungeon Master it meets along the way. Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks is for anyone who’s ever been lured by the enchantment and secrets of faraway fantasy worlds; it gives a personal face to the cloak-swishing, wand-yielding, lightsaber-rattling gamer in us all.” —Melissa Anelli, author of Harry, A History: The True Story of a Boy Wizard, His Fans, and Life Inside the Harry Potter Phenomenon

An Epic Quest for Reality Among Role Players, Online Gamers, and Other Dwellers of Imaginary Realms

THE LYONS PRESS

ETHAN GILSDORF

Tens of millions of people around the globe turn away from the “real” world to inhabit others. Movie fanfreaks design costumes and collect Lord of the Rings action figures. Some attend comic book conventions and Renaissance fairs, others play live-action roleplaying games (LARPs). The online game World of Warcraft (WoW) has alone lured twelve million users worldwide. Even old-school role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) are still wildly popular. Who are these gamers and fantasy fans? What explains the irresistible appeal of such “escapist” adventures? And what could one man find if he embarked on a journey through fantasy world after fantasy world? In an enthralling blend of travelogue, pop culture analysis, and memoir, forty-year-old former D&D addict Ethan Gilsdorf crisscrosses America, the world, and other worlds—from Boston to Wisconsin, New Zealand to France, and Planet Earth to the realm of Aggramar. On a quest that begins in his own geeky teenage past and ends in our online gaming future, he asks gaming and fantasy geeks how they balance their escapist urges with the kingdom of adulthood. He questions Tolkien scholars and medievalists. He speaks to grown men who build hobbit holes and speak Elvish, and to grown women who play massively multiplayer online games. He seeks out those who dream of elves, long swords, and heroic deeds, and mentally inhabit faraway magical lands. Gilsdorf records what lures them—old, young, male, female, able-bodied, and disabled—into fantasy worlds, and for what reasons, whether healthy, unhealthy, or in between.

(continued from front flap)

Delving deeper and deeper into geekdom, our noble hero plays WoW for weeks on end. He travels to pilgrimage sites: Tolkien’s hometown, movie locations, castles, and archives. He hangs out with Harry Potter tribute bands. At a LARP, he dresses as a pacifist monk for a weekend. He goes to fan conventions and gaming tournaments. He battles online goblins, trolls, and sorcerers. He camps with medieval reenactors—12,000 of them. He becomes Ethor, Ethorian, and Ethor-An3. He sews his own tunic. He even plays D&D. What he discovers is funny, poignant, and enlightening.

OLD WEST

Its wilderness notwithstanding, the Wild West was not necessarily a place to go in search of peace. While many settlers were decent folk, the American frontier’s wide open spaces also attracted unsavory characters in disproportionate numbers, many on the run looking for places to hide while they went on snubbing the law. Badasses of the Old West brings together in one compelling volume tales of the thirty-six worst (and best) robbers, rustlers, and bandits who shaped the history of the Wild West. From the famous, such as Billy the Kid and the Wild Bunch, to the lesserknown but still colorful and wicked Charles Brown and Bud Stevens, it compiles the stories of the most notorious black-hat wearers of a notorious age. Here are just some of the fascinating and forbidding faces you’ll meet:

PRAISE FOR FRANK M. AHEARN

FROM THE WORLD’S TOP EXPERT

“Ever thought you might need to slip quietly off the radar? Meet Frank M. Ahearn, America’s leading skip tracer, and now … its most improbable guardian angel.”—London Times

The authoritative guide to disappearing— insider tips, tools, and techniques Want to disappear or simply hide your personal information from would-be thieves and stalkers? How to Disappear is the ultimate guide to protecting your family, yourself, and your identity. The world’s top privacy consultant covers everything from tools for disappearing to discovering and eliminating the nearly invisible tracks and clues we leave wherever we go. Sharing decades of trade secrets, Frank M. Ahearn describes the three keys to disappearing, tells you everything you need to know about your digital footprint, discusses the dangers and opportunities of social networking sites, and shows you how to disappear from anyone who might do you harm.

ERASE YOUR DIGITAL FOOTPRINT, LEAVE FALSE TRAILS, AND VANISH WITHOUT A TRACE

Frank M. Ahearn built his first career by finding people who didn’t want to be found— from philandering celebrities to a certain White House intern (Monica Lewinsky) before anybody had heard of her, as well as countless cheaters, frauds, and bad guys. Using the “skip tracer” techniques he developed in the process, Ahearn embarked on a second career counseling those who wanted not to be found. If you’ve ever fantasized about disappearing—literally dropping out of sight or just eliminating the traceable evidence of your existence—How to Disappear is your guide. In a world-wise, straight-talking, wryly humorous narrative, Ahearn provides field-tested tips, tools, and techniques for maintaining privacy, as well as strategies for protecting personal information and preventing identity theft. You’ll learn key tactics such as misinformation (destroying all the data known about you), disinformation (creating fake trails), and reformation (getting where you want to be without leaving clues). Throughout, Ahearn shares real-life stories of his fascinating career—from nabbing adulterous celebrities to helping abuse victims find safety.

13

An indispensable resource not just for those determined to be anonymous, but for almost anyone in the brave new world of online information, How to Disappear sums up Ahearn’s dual philosophy: Don’t break the law, but know how to protect yourself.

Green, Inc. hardcover | 4c matte with spot gloss | 1c endsheets

In spring 2006, Christine MacDonald left journalism for a dream job at Conservation International, one of the world’s largest environmental organizations. Soon after she reported to the group’s Washington offices, it became all too apparent to her that something is rotten in today’s clubby, well-upholstered world of conservationists. Green, Inc. is a riveting first-person account of an eco-warrior’s travails at the crossroads of the nonprofit and corporate worlds—one that will shock anyone who has ever made a donation to an environmental group. NGOs that once dedicated themselves solely to saving pandas and parklands today vie for the favors of mining operations, logging companies, and homebuilders. Among the most generous donors are the biggest environmental scofflaws of all—energy conglomerates. Being a leading conservationist today means (in addition to a six-figure salary) scuba diving with rock stars and partying with corporate scions and celebrity journalists aboard gas-guzzling private jets and yachts. How do conservationists justify such dealings? The most common refrain: being tight with corporate leaders will help them change their polluting ways. However, argues MacDonald, the companies are benefiting far more than endangered species. While providing an essential overview of the global environmental movement, she centers her story on what goes on inside the world’s top conservation groups, examining the truth to claims that they have allowed themselves to be silenced by corporate dollars as environmental crisis looms.

7/

MacDonald’s fast-paced narrative flows from carefully checked facts, her own powerful first-hand anecdotes, and interviews with other insiders. A scandalous snapshot from inside a good cause gone bad, Green, Inc. comes at a time when global warming nears the point of no return and more people than ever are awakening to the consequences.

a woman’s guide to climbing with strength, grace, and courage

From one of the world’s leading female climbers, advice and inspiration for women who seek to discover the sport for themselves

For women intrigued by the sport oF climbing but intimidated by its male dominance and stereotype as “extreme,” girl on the rocks is a monumental and essential resource, providing instructions on technique, strength, and mental agility—from a woman’s perspective. through the sage advice of one of the world’s foremost female climbers and the lens of an internationally acclaimed photographer, women learn that climbing is more fun than dangerous, that overcoming fear can boost self-esteem, and that the fitness benefits are tremendous. most women learn climbing from men, but the sport is different for a woman—both physically and psychologically—and it is empowering for women to learn about climbing from “girls” who’ve been on the rocks themselves. bringing the sport to life alongside the book’s numerous color photos, Katie brown’s interviews with female climbers—from a young girl to a sixty-something professional climber—reveal, on a more intimate level, what the sport has done for them. Katie Brown is the young woman Rock & Ice magazine dubbed “The Best Female Climber of the Millennium.” An influential and groundbreaking climber among both genders, she began climbing at age thirteen and quickly dominated competition at the national and international levels. Now in her mid-twenties, she is a freelance writer and the author of Vertical World (FalconGuides). When not traveling the world as an elite professional climber, she lives in Moab, Utah.

From the author of the acclaimed Soul of the Heights, a stunning photographic celebration of the remarkable Rocky Mountains

Soul of the Rockies P o R t R a i t S o f a m e R i c a’ S L a R g e S t m o u n ta i n R a n g e

18 Ed Cooper was a pioneer during the “Golden Age” of North American climbing in the 1950s and early 1960s. His daring accomplishments in the American West and Canada have become legendary. For many years he continued to pursue the continent’s great peaks. In more recent years, camera in hand, he has produced aweinspiring mountain photographs that are in league with the works of Ansel Adams and Bradford Washburn. Ed is the author of the acclaimed Soul of the Heights: 50 Years Going to the Mountains (FalconGuides), and his photos have graced the covers of Audubon, Arizona Highways, Backpacker, National Geographic, and Sierra. He and his wife, Debby, live in Sonoma, California.

Discover the essence of the Rockies through ED COOPER’S lens. Celebrate the remarkable Rocky Mountains with this stunning photographic feast that takes us from the Canadian border at Idaho and Montana to the Mexican border at Big Bend National Park. Author, photographer, and legendary “climbing bum” ED COOPER brings America’s most iconic mountain range to life, passionately zeroing in on the heart of the Rockies, including most of the better known subranges, and capturing views of the highest peaks in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. In keeping with his sensibilities as a mountaineer and climber, Cooper provides the most current and relevant geodetic data for every featured peak, including newer, corrected altitudes that reflect more accurate measuring by the National Geodetic Survey. Readers can now easily look up each peak on topographic maps or view them in stunning three-dimensional display using tools such as Google Earth thanks to Cooper’s impressive collection of data found at the end of each chapter.

In Soul of the Heights, Ed Cooper revealed his story as a pioneering climber with a passion for, and lifetime dedication to, the majestic mountains of North America. Here, he brings the continent’s most iconic mountain range to life, zeroing in on its heart. In a stunning photographic feast that takes us from the Canadian border at Idaho and Montana to the Mexican border at Big Bend National Park, Soul of the Rockies provides a distillation of the best views the Rockies have to offer, with evocative cameo descriptions of many of the highest, most familiar, and most relevant peaks. All their glory shines through in this spectacular work.

Unlike any other book on the Rocky Mountains, Soul of the Rockies focuses exclusively on the mountains themselves rather than dwelling on related themes such as flora, fauna, mining, logging, and history. It is quite simply a distillation of the best views the Rockies have to offer, revealing through this spectacular work all the glory of America’s largest mountain range.

The behind-the-scenes story of the glory years of one of professional basketball’s best and most beloved teams More than half a century after the Boston Celtics’ legendary first championship, here is a riveting inside account of one of sports’ greatest franchises—between 1957 and 1969, winners of eleven titles, including a record eight in a row starting in 1959.

Author Lew Freedman, who grew up attending Celtics games and eventually befriended the players and team management, chronicles the team’s glory years under Auerbach, Russell, and a legendary lineup of other talents. Revealing how he was swept up in dramatic moments both on and off the court, Freedman has penned a gripping book about a vibrant sports town, the greatest players in basketball, and an unprecedented run of championships rarely challenged before or since in team sports. Lew Freedman is the author of thirty books, including Stadium Stories: Chicago Bears and The Way We Were New England (both Globe Pequot Press) as well as LeBron James: A Biography. A former sportswriter for the Chicago Tribune, he has won more than 250 journalism awards. Cover design by Bret Kerr | Cover photo © Corbis Images Printed in the United States of America

Auerbach, Cousy, Havlicek, Russell, and the Rise of the Boston Celtics Auerbach, Cousy, Havlicek, Russell, and the Rise of the Boston Celtics

In the spring of 1957, the Celtics, led by coach Red Auerbach, won a National Basketball Association championship for the first time. Auerbach had been building the team throughout the 1950s, but was still missing what he considered an essential piece, a single player in the middle who could hoist the team on his shoulders by doing the dirty work of rebounding and playing defense. That man was Bill Russell.

If you’re feeding more seed and suet to squirrels than to your birds, you’re not alone—virtually every backyard birder faces the squirrel dilemma. Squirrels’ remarkable flexibility, their ability to hang upside down by their back feet while feeding, and their amazing prowess in leaping from trees to feeders—and not getting hurt if they miss and hit the ground—all contribute to their success. All of these skills also prevent us from foiling them for long. To compound the problem, squirrels can climb smooth objects like poles, balance on a wire or other slim avenue, and keep their footing on slick surfaces. If they were not such nuisances at our bird feeding stations, we might be forced to admire and revere these talented animals. That’s why many manufacturers have invested large amounts of time and money in research and development, just to help backyard birders keep the squirrels out of their birds’ food. The result is a parade of products that can turn your squirrel problem into a source of endless amusement. FEEdERs THAT WORk

Spend an afternoon watching how your squirrels gain access to your feeders. Do they jump up from a spot below the feeder? Do they walk the edge of your neighbor’s fence and hop over to a feeder nearby? Or do they climb up through a shrub that’s close to the feeder? The more you know about the access path, the more likely it is you can solve the problem, often without any outlay of funds. Here are feeder options that will work if you are looking to foil your neighborhood squirrels. We’ve tried many of these solutions, and some of them do indeed do the job. Trick Feeders Trick feeders come in all shapes and sizes and in all price ranges. A popular option is a feeder with a spinning bottom that sends the squirrel flying when he applies his weight to the perch. Most birding specialty stores carry this feeder, which has a built-in rechargeable battery. No outdoor cord is required, but

Birding Tip: Wood is no good Don’t use wooden bird feeders! Squirrels chew through these in a matter of hours, emptying them of their seed. Instead, choose feeders made of hard plastic and/or metal, durable materials that resist squirrels’ industrious teeth.

you will need to charge the battery every so often. Once the squirrels learn that they can’t get to the food, they will back off. Another option is a feeder with spring-loaded perches. This trick feeder (shown here) can hold the weight of small birds. When a squirrel puts its weight on the perch, however, it gives way and the squirrel slips to the ground. Squirrels lean quickly, so once they’ve determined the seed is out of reach, they will lose interest.

11/9/10 11:02 AM

Wrap the feeder pole with metal flashing, which prevents squirrels from gaining a foothold as they climb.

If your feeder hangs from a clothesline or other line across your yard, thread the chain or line through a series of plastic tubes, cans, or other cylinders from one end to the other. When the squirrel walks across on the way to the feeder, the tubes will spin, dumping the squirrel on the ground.

Make your feeder pole out of PVC pipe. Squirrels can’t get solid footing on PVC material.

squirrel-Blocking solutions Defeating the wily squirrel has become a hobby of its own, a high-spirited struggle between humans and nature. The wide-ranging list of solutions involves various kinds of nontoxic chemicals, odor agents, alternate seed combinations, and even the old-fashioned catch-and-release—all of which provide the fun of watching squirrel behavior as they experience one product or process after another. Manufacturers now offer many products at outdoor recreation, farm and feed, and garden stores, with an even more inspired selection online (search “squirrel deterrents”). Most backyard birders try these products sequentially, seeing what works and using another solution to augment whatever success the first one offers. How effective are all of these products? As in all fields of endeavor, some solutions may prove very effective in one region of the country or against a particular squirrel species, while others may have no discernable effect at all. Red pepper is a natural chemical in chile peppers called capsaicin, which gives peppers their spicy heat. Squirrels appear to hate seed or suet coated with capsaicin—at least until they get used to it. Treated seed and suet are generally a little more expensive than food that does not contain the hot chemical. Birds in South America eat so many chile peppers that some species are called “bird peppers.” It stands to reason that the birds will not be put off by capsaicin-treated food, although these products receive mixed reviews from backyard birders. Other possible deterrents include a cloth bag or sock filled with mothballs, placed in the path to feeders, rags soaked with ammonia, placed near feeders, coyote urine (available in bottles), organic squirrel repellents, available at garden

Weight-activated feeders A weight-activated feeder holds nearly ten pounds of seeds, but its perch balances delicately as if it were part of an old-fashioned scale. When more than two small birds land on the perch, it rocks down and closes off the seed dispenser openings. Squirrels will try for days to find a way in, but the rugged construction and sensitive perch mechanism keep them from accessing any of the seed. Be sure to place this feeder a good distance from branches or other feeders, so the squirrel can’t keep its weight on another perch while trying to get past this one. A second option is a little mesh feeder, a perfect addition to a small garden, which has a built-in spring that responds to weight. Two or three birds can use the perches and feast on the seed inside, but squirrels are too heavy. When they try to climb on, the mesh lowers and shuts off the feeder’s holes. Squirrels can’t even climb on top and reach down the feeder, as this will close the feeder holes. squirrel cage Here’s a caged feeder that lets woodpeckers, nuthatches, sparrows, and other birds in, but

Spring-loaded perches

They’re out there every day, flashing through your yard on the wing or perching, inquisitive, in a tree above you while you putter in your garden or enjoy a cool drink on your patio. They collect on the utility wires above your apartment or suddenly congregate around puddles on your front walk. Winter locks your yard in an icy stasis, but still the birds arrive—gathering to huddle in a shrub, taking refuge just inside a hole in your shed, or poking through tree litter scattered on the snow’s frosty surface. One morning, as the days grow longer before the cold relents, you’re awakened by the clear glissando of a northern cardinal, the first herald of approaching spring. Birds telegraph the change of seasons, they clear last year’s berries off of your bushes and reduce the number of grubs in your lawn, and they brighten your mornings with their song. They already share your backyard and your neighborhood with you, but you haven’t formally invited them over for dinner. Luckily, it’s never too late to do so. Why do more than sixty-eight million people in America watch birds? Perhaps it’s the birds’ seemingly infinite diversity in limitless combinations—the remarkable variety of sizes, colors, songs, and behavior patterns we can observe. Once we look beyond the sooty pigeons at the bus station or the starlings soaring in synchronized flocks over congested highways, the diversity of this family of the animal kingdom is staggering. In North America alone, we can count more than 950 bird species that either breed in the United States (sans Hawaii) and Canada, or put in regular appearances around the continent’s fringes as they drift over from faraway shores. Dedicated backyard birders in nearly every state and province can tell you that over the course of a year, you might see more than seventy different species in your own yard—from hawks, geese, and gulls passing overhead to many varieties of sparrows, finches, and other small birds at your feeders and in your shrubs and trees. If you’re fortunate enough to live on the edge of a pond or lake, in a farming community, or near a desert—or if you have a large property with many trees—your backyard visitors may expand to number more than one hundred different species.

For this re-design I significantly raised the aesthetic value of the book by making full use of the 2 color possibilities. I utilized transparencies, but kept a limited font selection of Gill Sans and Adobe Caslon along with using illustrations that were all stylized, most appear as silos. I also adapted and created a number of original illustrations to suit the project. The book won positive remarks from customer reviews on Amazon.com.

caused many of the greens on the great golf courses to be nearly unplayable, but has really hampered the ability of a number of players to negotiate the new speed levels.

For this catalog project - I redesigned the company catalog into 3 distinct categories. I conceived the idea of having James Polisky illustrate the covers with a similar look. (The original idea was to have one image span across the 3 covers.) I assisted with art direction as the covers were being worked on. For the interiors - I picked up elements of the covers and designed magazine style spreads when possible to highlight the books.

After fourteen seasons as an NFL star, Everson Walls retired to his hometown of Dallas, Texas. He and former Cowboys teammate Ron Springs worked together on a variety of charities, and their families became close. But, as time passed, Ron could no longer conceal the ravaging effects of his diabetes. Before Walls knew it, his friend’s simple medical procedures had become amputations and dialysis. Ron’s life was on the line. In A Gift for Ron, Walls tells the moving story of how he witnessed the suffering of his former mentor and his family and, on hearing that a potential kidney donor had fallen through, learned that he and Ron shared something truly precious: a blood type. Walls knew his only option—to donate a kidney to save his friend’s life.

Empire and its Discontents: Regional Rebellions, Slave Revolts, and Political Conspiracies in Brazil, 1800–1850

On Militancy and the Art of the Egg: Theological Lessons from Osama Bin Laden’s Former Audiocassette Collection

Gabe Paquette

38

Assistant Professor of History at The Johns Hopkins University

Flagg Miller

Professor Paquette will discuss the rebellions, revolts, and political conspiracies that nearly tore Brazil apart after it gained independence in 1822—particularly the Confederation of the Equator (1824), the Malê Revolt (1835), the Cabanagem (1835–36), and the Praieira Revolt (1848–49). Among the questions he will ask, and answer, are: What did the rebels want? Why did they fail? What were the long-term consequences for Brazil, for South America, and for the Atlantic World?

Associate Professor of Religious Studies, University of California at Davis

Trained as a linguistic anthropologist, Professor Miller’s research focuses on cultures of contemporary Muslim reform in the Middle East and especially in Yemen. His first book, The Moral Resonance of Arab Media: Audiocassette Poetry and Culture in Yemen, explores how Yemenis have used traditional poetry and new media technologies to envision a productive relationship between tribalism and progressive Muslim reform. His current book focuses on the trajectory of Bin Laden’s leadership and al-Qaida as figured through an archive of more than 1,500 audiocassettes formerly deposited in his house in Qandahar, Afghanistan.

Professor Paquette graduated from Wesleyan as a history major in 1999. While finishing his PhD at the University of Cambridge, he returned to Wesleyan as a visiting instructor in history and a tutor in the CSS.

Interview with MIT Media Lab Guru Michael Hawley – Producer of the World’s Largest Book

r. Michael Hawley is currently Director of Special Projects and founder of MIT’s GO Expeditions program. Prior to that, Hawley was one of the heads of the MIT Media Lab for 10 years. In 2001, Hawley founded Friendly Planet, a nonprofit company dedicated to children's education in developing countries. Friendly Planet is now producing a series of photo books about what it's like to grow up in some of the world's

most extraordinary cultures. Recently, the company published its first book, entitled Growing Up Bhutan. This is how the book is described on the Friendly Planet website: At over 130 pounds and 5 x 7 feet, Guinness World Records acknowledges Friendly Planet's Bhutan as the world's largest published book. But it's less like a book and more like an entire gallery show of enor-

One of my differentiating strengths is that I am not just a designer/project manager. My academic background is in English and journalism. I enjoy writing and look for opportunities to practice this skill. My background enables me to see the big picture on any project, small or large. I can understand the challenges of an editorial employee/department. This is an interview I conducted with MIT Media Lab Professor Michael Hawley upon his publication of the world’s largest book, Growing Up Bhutan.

serenity and specialness that make Bhutan so unique.

volume. The subject is the remarkable kingdom of Bhutan—the grandeur of its gorgeous scenery, the wonderfully warmhearted people there, and the Copies of the books are being sold for $10,000 with profits going to aid the Friendly Planet charities. The book is being produced and bound locally by Acme Bookbinding of Charlestown, MA—the oldest bookbinder in the world. "The book is a masterpiece," says Paul Parisi, president of Acme. "It's a little like having an incredible larger-than-life art gallery in one volume. So crafting the binding to match that level of beauty became a labor of love for us." Dr. Hawley chatted with Pages recently while he was in Tokyo on a promotional tour for Growing Up Bhutan.

Pages:

With all the forms of media at your disposal, how did you settle on the traditional, albeit on a revolutionary largescale, form of the book?

Dr. Hawley: I love books, personally, and we always had in mind the idea of creating a series of books that both helped to show what it is like to grow up in one of the world's extraordinary cultures, and helped to raise funds to support schools and scholars in those places. Little books can't do both very effectively. The big book, as fanciful and impractical-seeming as it is, actually is both sensible and effective. First, we can charge a lot for it, but it doesn't cost that much to make, so it really can raise good money. Second, it captures real attention—there's an undeniable "wow" when a new person first encounters it; everyone smiles (the thing is so absurdly big that it makes you feel like a two-year-old again) and then enjoys browsing it more deeply. And third, it's actually quite practical. There is hardly an art gallery anywhere here in Tokyo (where I currently am) that can display imagery that totals about 5 x 400 feet of surface area. But the whole gallery of giant-sized images fits neatly on one 5 x 7 easel. The cost of framing or mounting even one 5 x 7 print might be $2500. But in our package, the images average out to less than $100 each, a bargain, actually, although the whole thing adds up to an epic.
