SERVER-CLASS PCI EXPRESS™ BACKPLANE

PCI EXPRESS SERIAL SLOTS

Trenton’s BPX6736 is a server-class backplane with four PCI Express™option card slots. The butterfly form factor of the BPX6736 is designed for use in a 2U chassis.

PCIe1 and PCIe3 option card slots are located on side B of the butterfly backplane. Side B is opposite the SHB and the side B slots are driven by x1 PCI Express links from a Trenton MCX-series SHB. PCIe4 and PCIe2 are located on side A of the backplane and are driven with x8 PCI Express electrical links from a server-class SHB. PCIe4 is a x16 and PCIe2 is a x8 mechanical slot. Trenton SHBs support the autonegotiation and link training features that enables all of the option card slots to support x8, x4 and x1 PCI Express cards with PCIe4 also capable of supporting x16 PCI Express option cards with a x8 PCIe link.

SHB SLOT Accepts an SHB Express™ (PICMG® 1.3) compliant (server-class) processor such as a Trenton NLT/NLI, SLT/SLI or MCX-series system host board. Using an MCX-series SHB will maximize the capabilities of all available PCI Express option card slots.

USB AUDIO CONTROLLER

CONNECTING POWER

The audio controller on the BPX6736 backplane eliminates the need to dedicate an option card slot to a sound card. The USB audio controller supports a variety of speaker, headset and microphone configurations. The high-performance stereo audio ADC/DAC, general purpose I/O connections and codec functionality are key features of the BPX6736’s audio controller.

A new approach is required to connect system power due to the combination of new power supply technologies and the softpower control signals available via the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI). ACPI signals are now supported by PICMG 1.3 SHBs and backplanes. Auxiliary power connectors located on the PICMG 1.3 backplanes now deliver all of the power directly to the edge connectors of the SHB.

The USB4 port from the Trenton MCX-series SHB provides the input for the USB audio controller and the USB4 input becomes Audio0 on the BPX6736 backplane. If a Trenton NLT/NLI or SLT/SLI SHB is used, then the SHBs must be factory-equipped with the optional USB routing to the backplane. Likewise non-Trenton SHBs must provide the optional USB I/O backplane routing defined in the PICMG 1.3 specification in order to enable the audio functionality of the Trenton BPX6736 backplane.

OPTIONAL USB 2.0 INTERFACES Trenton’s BPX6736 provides one USB 2.0 header capable of supporting two general purpose USB 2.0 backplane interface ports.

OPTIONAL ETHERNET INTERFACE Trenton’s BPX6736 backplane supports the optional Ethernet routing feature of the SHB Express (PICMG 1.3) specification. One 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet RJ-45 connector is available for use on the backplane in conjunction with a Trenton MCX-series system host board. The SHB OPTIONAL BACKPLANE I/O SUPPORT TABLE explains the backplane I/O capabilities supported by Trenton’s PICMG 1.3 System Host Boards.

POWER CONNECTORS

Auxiliary power connectors on the backplane are provided to help improve system Mean Time To Repair (MTTR). All power can be delivered to the SHB via the board’s edge connectors. Trenton’s PICMG 1.3 SHBs and backplane SHB edge connector slots have ample power pins available to meet the power demands of highperformance dual-processor SHBs. The ATX/EPS and +12V power connectors on the BPX6736 backplane also have an ample number of power pins available to meet these demands. The system designer needs to be aware of the potential power demands of the entire system, including the particular SHB, to ensure that both the power supply and the power connectors in the cable harness can safely deliver the necessary power to drive the entire system. Specific implementations of ACPI signals, ATX/EPS power supply type and the operating system software will determine the specific connection method for the power supply. For example the use of the Power Good (PWRGD), Power Supply On (PSON#), Five Volt Standby (5VSB) and the Power Button (PWRBT#) ACPI or soft power control signals require the following connection method:

The BPX6736 backplane is available with low-profile right-angle power connectors suitable for use with either an ATX or EPS power supply.

AUXILIARY POWER CONNECTOR The +12V power connectors on the BPX6736 route auxiliary power to the SHB’s edge connectors. This new capability of PICMG 1.3 compliant SHBs and backplanes eliminates the need for auxiliary power connections on the system host board.

5VSB

Rtypical = 8.2k W

POWER INDICATORS Surface-mount LEDs provide a convenient visual check for +5V, -5V, +5V AUX,+12V, -12V and +3.3V power connection and status. CAUTION: Never install or remove the SHB or any option card from the BPX6736 backplane if the +5V AUX LED is GREEN. If the system appears to be off and the+5V AUX LED is GREEN, you need to remove or turn off the incoming power to the system power supply.

PRINTED CIRCUIT LAYERS The backplane is a six-layer, .062” thick board with three separate signal layers: +5V/+12V, +3.3V and ground. Multi-layer backplane construction provides excellent noise immunity.

ACPI signal usage is optional and may be turned off using the SHB’s BIOS and/or signal jumpers. Specific power connections and BIOS parameters will differ depending on unique system design requirements. Refer to the Appendix B (Power Connection) and Advanced Setup BIOS sections found in the Technical Reference Manual for your specific Trenton system host board for more information.
