body system? • Bone marrow is part of the immune system because the cells are initially from the bone marrow. They form through a process called hematompoiesis in which stem cells turn into either mature cells of the immune system or into precursors of cells that migrate out of the bone marrow. • Skeletal system because the bone marror is located in the larger bones of the body.
where is it? • You can find it in any bone that holds cancellous tissue. • Bones that hold bone marrow are the skull, sternum, ribs, pelvis, and the femur bone • Smaller bones do not have bone marrow.
what is the function? • Bone marrow houses stem cells which transforms themselves into platelets, red blood cells, and white blood cells. • The stem cells wait until unhealthy, weakened, or damaged cells need to be replaced.
how many? • There are more then 15,000 bone marrow transplants are preformed in the united states per year.
what’s the success rate? • 30% of people receiving allogeneic transplants do not survive. • Autologous transplants have a survival rate near 90%. • After a transplant, the person will live a

who would get a transplant? • People who have cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, MDS, MPS, and other blood cancers and diseases would get a transplant.
who can donate? • From the age of 18 to 60 and in good health you can donate. • You can be alive to donate.
what might disqualify someone? • Someone’s age • How bad the sickness.
how much dose it cost? • It doesn’t cost the donor anything. • The recipient had to pay for the removal, but the insurance company will pay.
