PowerPoint Handouts for Boiling Point and Pressure Relationship

Boiling Point and Pressure Relationship

Boiling Point and Pressure Relationship A liquid boils at a temperature at which its vapor pressure is equal to the pressure of the gas above it.

Bubbles of vaporized liquid (i.e., gas) form within the bulk liquid and then rise to the surface where they burst and releasethegas.

The temperature of a boiling liquid remains constant, even when more heat is added.

The lower the pressure of a gas above a liquid, the lower the temperature at which the liquid will boil.

As a liquid is heated, its vapor pressure increases until the vapor pressure equals the pressure of the gasabove it.

High

altitude areas have lower atmospheric pressure than lower altitude areas. At sea level, average atmospheric pressure is 1.00 atm.

58

Why atmospheric pressure does affects the boiling point of a liquid but not the melting point of a solid?

Lowatmospheric pressure

High atmospheric pressure

Boiling point of water at 1.00 atm pressure is 100 degrees Celsius. Directly proportional to atmospheric pressure.

because… because…

Atmospheric pressure readily exerts pressure on the molecules of liquid, but not on solid, for the molecules of solid are already compact together.

Why do ionic compounds have a high boiling point?

59

What are the two elements having the highest boiling point?

… because ionic compounds have high boiling point due to the strong electrostatic attraction between the ions involved.

Answer:

Tungste n and rhenium

Pressure When the external pressure is:

What isthe purpose of determining the boiling point of asubstance?

 less than one atmosphere, the boiling point

of the liquid is lower than its normal boiling point.

The boiling point of a liquid equal to one atmosphere is called the normal boiling p oint.. point The boiling point of the liquid greater than one atmosphere is also greater than its normal boiling point

Answer:

It is very useful in determining the purity of a substance. If the substance boil greater than the normal boiling point of a substance then it is a good indication that the substance is not pure.
