Blessing Your Family and Friends The single most important concern we should have for our family and friends should be the same primary concern Jesus has for us: We must
make it our ultimate goal to help them know and love God with all their heart.
A Biblical Blessing You Can Use and Model Your Blessings After This is the high priestly blessing from Numbers 6:226:22-27 that the priests were to speak over the nation of Israel. This is a blessing that you can use on a daily basis for your family. Feel free to add to this blessing as you see fit.
“I pray that the LORD will bless and protect _________ (insert name of family member or friend), and that He will show _________ (insert name) mercy and kindness. May the LORD be good to _________ (insert name) and give _________ (insert name) peace.”
How do we do that? One of the simplest and most powerful ways to help our family and friends know and love God is to speak a daily blessing over them. The concept speaking a blessing over someone may seem strange, but it is scriptural. It's an ancient and respected custom dating back to biblical times. In fact, the family setting for the blessing apparently predates its use in the public setting (Genesis 27:27-29); the priest or other official who spoke benedictions on the people of Israel was only supplementing the most basic of blessings - the one given by the father to the children. The blessing you speak over your friends and family can be words you’ve chosen or they can be verses that you’ve chosen from the Scriptures. Don’t worry about getting the words to sound just right, what is most important is asking God to bless them with a love for Him and others throughout their day. You can actually lay your hands on them and proclaim the blessing in person. However, they do not need to be physically present to bless them, God will honor your blessing whether they are physically present or not. Keep in mind though blessing should never take the place of prayer. We still need to pray daily for our friends and family.
