BEIMUN – March 12 - 15 The sixteenth Beijing Model United Nations was well supported by fourteen IST high school students from last Thursday through to Sunday. It was a very positive and dynamic gathering for experienced as well as novice delegates. IST representatives at BEIMUN were: Seul Bee Lee and Marcella Bellettini (Youth Assembly); Ha Yeon Lee and Janey Fryer (Special Conference); Olivia Werner-Hickey (International Court of Justice); Melissa Gabriel (Human Rights Council); Hye In Lim (Economic and Social Council); Sye Lin Choi (Environment Commission); Sang Min Kim, William Wang, Bo Bae Son, Chae Won Lee, Ju Hwan Son and Hyun Young Lee (General Assembly); and Mr. Andy Rossberg (Director) and Ms. Theresa Werner (Co-director). Human Rights Council Delegate, Melissa Gabriel (11W) writes of her first Model United Nations experience:

Left to right: Mr. Andy Rossberg and Grade 11W delegates, Hyun

Young Lee, Olivia Werner-Hickey, Hye In Lim and Bo Bae Son ‘The BEIMUN conference was a great success for me even though it was my first time. At the start I was overwhelmed by the high standard of English fluency and level of discussion but I grew more and more confident. On the last day I presented my resolutions to the assembly with four other delegates after considerable lobbying. I received some very good responses about this and I also made many friends with the members of my group. I would really like to do this again.’

ACAMIS CULTURAL CONVENTION AT DULWICH COLLEGE - BEIJING

Meg Roberts, Secondary Drama Teacher

From March 12th- March 15th, myself, Mr. Grierson and a group of 18 grade 9-10 students participated in the ACAMIS High School Cultural Convention held at Dulwich College, Beijing. The event was extremely well organized, and Dulwich IB students did a fantastic job of running proceedings with the assistance of their teacher, Mr. Shane O'Shea. IST students participated in a wide range of ARTS workshops depending on their chosen Arts practice. Professional Arts practitioners ran most of the workshops, and it was a very unique and rewarding experience for our students to be involved and learn about their chosen Arts area from some amazing professional Arts practitioners. Visual Arts students were able to join in a wide range of workshops, including Printmaking run by Chinese artist Mr. Tian Li, Collage with collage artist and painter Mr. Jesse Leroy Smith from the UK, and mixed media painting with graphic artist and painter Mr. Nick Hersey, also from the UK.. The Drama group worked with two very highly skilled Theatre practitioners from the UK, Marcus Romer and Kenny Hegarty, to produce an amazing performance of parts of Kafka's 'Metamorphosis' for the final concert. "Metamorphoses" was the theme of the convention, and the students really did experience change and transformation during the unfolding of their workshops and socialization with students from other schools around China. Our musicians were also involved in some very exciting workshops, perfecting their individual instruments and working with Haydn Adams for Band and Nicholas Smith for Strings. Choir students worked with Shane O'Shea, Head of Music and festival coordinator at Dulwich College. The final concert of the 3 day program was a fantastic celebration of student work, and it was amazing to witness the professionalism and growth of all the students involved. If any students have the chance to join one of these conventions in the future, I highly recommend they jump on board and have a go, as this kind of experience is invaluable in terms of personal and academic growth. Well done to all the participants- you were all truly fantastic representatives for IST!!!

Grade 5 Exhibition Update - by Gurkriti Singh& Philip Johnston Greetings again. This week we have continued to work on our second inquiry point. Groups have gone on field trips, taken notes and contacted people. The immunization and malnutrition groups visited a hospital and interviewed the doctors for information of their second inquiry point. The landfills group contacted and carried out an email interview with a landfill expert in the USA. Also the sporting communities group went to visit some international teams, and met members of the Gold Coast Mariners including some Socceroos. They interviewed some players and also met the manager and coach of the team. This week everybody had a go at designing a logo to put on the exhibition shirt. We voted by having ‘five pennies’ to spend. We placed pennies as we wanted on the designs in different combinations. Everybody did a great job and put in a lot of effort to make the logos. The five most popular designs are going to be combined together onto one t-shirt. The logistics group will decide what the final logo will look like. Another significant event this week is that we are very happy to introduce a new ESL teacher who has just arrived in our school. Her name is Ms. Jacky Ong. We wish her a happy and productive stay at IST. Ms. Ong will be replacing Mrs. Agustina who is leaving to return to Australia because she will soon be giving birth to a little baby girl. We are very sorry to have Mrs. Augustine leave us, but we are very happy for her and wish her a bright future back in Australia. Talk to you all next week - The Grade Five Team

Teachers Learning from Teachers: Collaboration Among PYP Schools by Josianne Fitzgerald, PYP Coordinator Think back to the last time you learned something. It might have been the recipe for a dish you liked or the details on a school event. It was probably information that someone shared with you. Human are social animals. Brain research tells us that the brain likes to learn in a social context. Marzano tells us that cooperative learning is one of the most effective strategies for learning, and that all learners, even teachers, benefit from collaboration. This is one of the reasons why the PYP requires teachers to plan collaboratively and encourages schools to network within a region. There are 3 PYP schools in Beijing: BISS, BCIS, and WAB. The PYP coordinators of those schools and I help each other with PYP issues, one of which is professional development opportunities. Several times a year we schedule job alike. These are opportunities for teachers with similar responsibilities to share strategies, ideas, successes and challenges. We have had three job alike this year already: one for ESL teachers, one for the Grade 5 Exhibition at BISS, and one for PE here at IST on Wednesday. We have two more scheduled: one for art and one for music. The PE job alike on Wednesday coincided with a presentation given by Mr. Walsh and Mr. Sherratt on creating a community of learners. It was attended by IST teachers and teachers from International Schools in Tianjin and Beijing. At a job alike, teachers gather in one of our schools. They may share planning documents or student work samples. They will answer each others’ questions and explore their common understanding of the PYP. They will congratulate each other on their successes and they will set goals. Teachers learning from teachers is an excellent form of PD and at IST, we do our best to support that. 5 Weishan Road, Shuanggang Jinan District, Tianjin 300350 P.R.China Tel: 86 22 28592001 Fax: 86 22 285920 Email: [email protected] www.istianjin.org

U13 Boys Basketball Exchange at TEDA

Sports Brief The IST high school girls soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with REGO at IST on Monday afternoon. With solid play in goal by Manon, strong defensive play by Serena, midfield efforts of Janey and Ibuki, and a few scoring opportunities for Ariel, the IST girls improve to 1-2-1 for the season. The IST girls have a game at TIS in Monday, March 23. The IST U14 girls went to ISB for the ISAC basketball exchange on March 14th. The IST girls played 3 games from 13:15 to 5:00. Only 8 players were able to make the trip to ISB. For the first game, the girls played very hard with HISB. After a tough game, IST won by 10:9. For the second game the girls won easily against DCB. The third opponent was WAB. Playing against the strong WAB team, despite hard play by the IST girls, IST lost the game by 6:10. Improvement Continues For V. Girls’ Soccer

- Coach Martin On Monday our Girls played a spirited Rego team and came away with a creditable 0:0 draw. Rego girls huffed and puffed but they were unable to break through the IST defense which was superbly marshalled by Serena. Our front line, which is led by Ariel, had a couple of chances and were a little unlucky not to score. The coaches are pleased that the team continues to improve in all aspects of its play: we’ve made a great start to our season. ———————————————————————— The Varsity boys soccer team are still struggling to find their best form. They lost their third straight game 1-2 in a scrappy affair with local bitter rivals REGO. They will hope to get back to winning ways on Friday when they take on Dulwich College in Beijing.

On Saturday 14, 2009 the Basketball U13 Boys team traveled to Teda International School to participate in a basketball exchange with teams from Tianjin and Beijing. IST players Alan Armony, Dong Won Lee, Ho Sung Kang, Victor Bouteiller, Jae Woong Park, Axel Cronje, Aaron Xu, and Joon Chan Lee (Mathias Pedersen was away) got on the bus full of energy and ready to play their first games against other 7th grade teams.

The first game against ISB1, one of the strongest teams, was a tough beginning. The boys ended the first half losing 12 to 2 but managed to challenge ISB’s superiority and finished the game losing 15 to 20. This game helped the IST team to understand some fundamental elements of the game. Most important, they started their next game with the decision to play good basketball. And this is what they did. They played against DCB, winning 41 to 10. In their third game, against YCIS, the IST boys were on fire: they dominated the game, which ended 56 to 6.

U14 Boys BB last Saturday Exchange

- by Tomson Chen Game 1: vs. ISB W 29-17 This win was what boosted our confidence throughout the exchange. At the beginning we were all nervous of ISB because of their name, but as the game progressed our nerve shifted to determination, giving us the confidence to win and dominate, easy to see that IST dominated the game through and trough despite only having six members of team present. Game 2: vs. BCIS W 39-18 This was a more relaxed game, but we still fought hard and received our reward, everyone was steady and we fully took advantage of their downed attitude. We won the game happily, which gave us a good mentality to face the powerful WAB. Game 3: vs. WAB W 24-23 It was the best game of the season, thrilling, exciting, hard and real high-tempo. At first IST were down by 9 points but throughout we fought hard and comeback to be down by only 1 point, thanks to 3 pointers from Young Jin and the overall great defense from everybody. And at the last minute when WAB was attacking we were down by still 1 point, WAB charged with full force and number 34 hit a jump shot, luckily Tomson blocked it and caught the ball quickly passing it to Hyung Chan (aka Jackie Chang) who converted it into a beautiful lay-up. The boys played a wonderful game with strong defense and accurate shots, every member of the team was crucial, beautiful rebounding from Jackie Chang, good driving from WeiZe Ooi, wonderful 3 pointer by YoungJin, Fine passes from Jeong Il, superb rips from Hunter and last but not least the influential Tomson Chen who scored crucial goals, made crucial blocks and magnificent steals. Oh of course, great coaching from Ms. Zhao and Robert Mitchell. It was an awesome thought also breath-taking weekend but the boys made their mark and left Beijing with the best results, Beijing watch out, here we come!

Congratulations! Jung Hyun, a 5M Student is the winner for the Water Bottle Logo contest. That means her design will be printed on the new water bottles. The water bottles will be coming soon from Elementary Roots & Shoots.

PFO NEWS The PFO met with Jim Gourley earlier this week and learned that one of the Gui'de students that we have been sponsoring to attend university has recently received a scholarship from the Trace Foundation. The PFO has therefore decided to transfer some of the funds that had been set aside for his education towards helping another Gui'de student that is in need at university. The Teda Club (TGI Friday's building) has given us permission to practice the Roaring Twenties parent performance dance in their dance room. Rehearsals will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:15 to 12:15. Parents are practicing to perform a dance number called "Nowadays (Hot Honey Rag) from the movie "Chicago." You can view the original performance from the movie on YouTube by clicking on the above link. All parents are welcome to come join in the fun every Tuesday or Friday morning! The PFO Spring Fundraiser Dance will be held on Saturday, April 25th at the Hotel Nikko Tianjin. Our theme this year is "The Roaring Twenties!" Parent volunteers are needed to make this a successful event. If you're talented at decorating, shopping, music, or any aspect of party planning, we welcome your help. Please contact Aideen Murphy if you are willing to lend a helping hand. Sign up sheets for various aspects of the ball are in the parent lounge. In addition, if you know of a local business that would be willing to donate coupons, merchandise, services, etc. to the silent auction please obtain a procurement form (we have copies in English, Chinese, and Korean) from Frances Tschoepel or Susan Johnston. We are starting to compile our music list for the night, so if you have a favorite song you would like to dance to at the ball, please email us at [email protected] . 8 Weishan Road, Shuanggang Jinan District, Tianjin 300350 P.R.China Tel: 86 22 28592001 Fax: 86 22 285920 Email: [email protected] www.istianjin.org

(Continued from page 1)

I would like to congratulate our entire community and especially the teachers and students in the elementary school on this wonderful affirmation from the IB on the quality of the learning programme that is provided here at IST. Weishan Lu and the School Entrance I greatly appreciate the patience that our community has shown towards the terrible mess that constitutes the main road to our school. You will be aware that we have again reversed the entrance and exit gates so that all entry and exit is via the north gate (or main entrance). We hope to have both gates open again within ten days; however, in the meantime I ask that you remind your drivers of the importance of taking extra care when driving on campus at this time and especially when dropping off and collecting students. Please keep to the 5KM speed limit and please attend carefully to the directions provided by our security and support staff. Unfortunately road works such as these can result in other problems and today our telephone lines were cut. We hope to have these restored very soon and apologize if you have been unable to contact the school. Please be aware that you are always free to contact me on my personal mobile should you have any serious concern or need to contact the school. My number is: 1392-044-8274. Third Quarter Draws to an End Next Friday marks the end of the third quarter of the school year. Students in the Secondary school will receive their quarterly report next Friday and will have parent-teacher conferences on the following Monday and Tuesday evenings. Elementary students will also be receiving shortly their invitations to their child’s student-led conferences and attached to this invitation is a short informal report indicating how the student has progressed and whether or not a more formal parent-teacher conference is required in addition to the student-led conference. The teaching faculty is very much looking forward to seeing you all over the next couple of weeks and to sharing with you elements of your child’s learning. Warm Regards,

Steve Moody Director.
