[email protected] www.istianjin.org Dear Parents and Students, On Tuesday this week the school sent home ‘Intent to Return to IST for the Following School Year’ forms. I very much appreciate that for many parents this is not an easy question to answer due to the uncertainty of the current world economy and nature of individual contracts and company arrangements. Nevertheless it is vitally important for the school to develop as accurate a picture as possible of what enrolment in the school is likely to look like for the coming school year. Significant swings in enrolment obviously have a very big impact on school finances and on staffing. I ask therefore that you please complete this form and return it to school as soon as possible. If you really do not know your plans please check the ‘Undecided’ option. If you are leaving please consider providing a reason so that we can better understand the enrolment and departure patterns. Thank you very much for your attention to this important request.

FRIDAY, 24 APRIL 2009
This Week at the Library and Information Literacy Center It's been a busy week as we all have been in preparation for EARTH DAY, and we have continued to focus on Poetry Month and Poem in your Pocket on 30 April. Perhaps parents would like to watch with their children ‘The man who planted trees’ by Jean Giono @ http://dotsub.com/view/2d7b8a37-4f64-4241-8019-642e965d124f This lovely story is narrated in French and it has several translated subtitles, German, English, Chinese (traditional), Spanish, Italian, etc. Unfortunately no Korean. Since earth day is in the air— a lovely piece to share.
Grade 10 performance at this month’s Thursday Night Live on April 30th This month’s Thursday Night Live is a Drama night! There has been lots of great work being developed by Secondary Drama students, and we invite you to come and enjoy the fruits of their labor! There will be Mask and Mime performances from Grades 7 and 8’s, an encore Slapstick performance from our own Grade 7 Marx Brothers gang, and some Non Naturalist scenes presented by Grade 9 students. There will also be a Chinese Opera performed by Mu Rong’s Grade 9 Chinese class, as well as a short play exploring relationships directed by Mr. Djorf Amirouche and involving Grade 10 students. Grade 10 Drama students are also planning something special for audiences. Keep reading to find out what! Grade 10 Drama students explore ‘Teen Pressures’: As part of this month’s Thursday Night Live show, Grade 10 Drama students will be showcasing current work that they have been doing based around the theme of Teen Pressure. The group has been working on these scenes in their Drama classes, and all ideas and script development has been original work designed by them, with help and guidance from Grade 10 Drama teacher, Miss Roberts. Through a range of scenes the group of 8 students will explore some of the pertinent and sometimes uncomfortable issues that are facing them as teens. The issues range from alcohol abuse and exam pressure to teen sexual issues, and have been chosen specifically to reflect what the students feel are real pressures that they face today. The scenes follow the same group of ‘Teens” through a series of real life situations and events, and hopefully help to shed light on what teenagers here at IST and universally around the world are going through as they grow and develop into young adults. As there are some scenes involved in this work that do touch on issues relating to sex and alcohol use, they will be scheduled in the show to go on stage at the end of the program. This will hopefully allow parents with younger children who do not feel comfortable letting them watch these scenes to head to the library or foyer area to wait for the show to finish. Ideally, these scenes are not designed to offend and have been given very careful treatment by the students and teacher involved. However, we do recognize that this material is not necessarily suitable for all ages, and we would like to provide the opportunity for parents to choose what their younger children are able to watch or not watch. We hope that everyone will come and see the wonderful range of acting abilities and talents that our secondary students have to offer us. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday April 30th, starting at 7pm! Don’t forget complimentary buses will run from Ao Cheng to IST at 6pm, and then return to Ao Cheng at the end of the show. Teen Act for Aids will sell refreshments. Entry is FREE. 3 Weishan Road, Shuanggang Jinan District, Tianjin 300350 P.R.China Tel: 86 22 28592001 Fax: 86 22 285920 Email:

Greetings! Last week, we worked on and presented our research for Inquiry point 3, which was about how groups and individuals involved with our issues address them. At the moment, we are all working to fix the weaknesses in our presentations while we are also working on our last Inquiry point - what our actions will be. Last week we had the weekend to work on our presentations but Monday and Tuesday were still very busy and our classrooms were a mess. On Tuesday every group presented their findings on what actions individuals and groups take to address the issues and to make a difference in the world. There was a lot of interesting information discussed in our presentations, and several groups used ‘xtranormal’ to design animations to get their point across. We are becoming more innovative and more IT savvy! We have been through this process before and are now well aware of what makes a good presentation. We still make mistakes, but we are probably more aware of them and we listen more when we are being debriefed and take account of the changes we need to make next time. We are all taking a deep breath and readying ourselves for the final push on to May 5 – 8, the actual Exhibition. We are practicing the performance and are working hard to get things right. The holiday break had set us back quite a lot and we still have much to do to polish our performances. Grade 5’s actions involve getting money to adopt an animal, posting a video, helping organize sports day, holding a movie night and other actions. Once again a very big thank you to our mentor teachers. Remember to come and see our Exhibition presentations from May 5-8. Wish us luck! We hope you have a restful weekend. The Grade Five Team
Student Excursion to TRIS performance of The Crucible Grades 9 and 10, accompanied by Mr. MacKenzie, Miss Roberts, Mr. Quevedo, Ms Surridge, Mrs. Nathan and Mrs. Nathan went to see a performance of The Crucible at TRIS on Tuesday 21st April. The show was held in the auditorium, and it was obvious right from the start that the TRIS students had put a huge effort into their work. The settings, costumes and characterization was very well executed, and was also accompanied by an original live music score.
The Crucible is a very intense play. It was written by American playwright Arthur Miller and is “based on the
actual events that, in 1692, led to the Salem Witch Trials , a series of hearings before local magistrates to prosecute over 150 people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. The play was written in the early 1950s as a response to McCarthyism , when the US government blacklisted accused communists. Miller himself was to be questioned by the House of Representatives' Committee on Un-American Activities in 1956 and convicted of contempt of Congress for failing to identify others present at meetings he had attended.”
Historically this play has been very significant, and it was strongly performed and cleverly interpreted by the students of TRIS. The opportunity to attend and enjoy live theatre is something that students in Tianjin do not always have, so it was a great chance for our students to appreciate the work, effort and artistry involved in staging such an involved play. Congratulations to the teachers and students at TRIS! 4 Weishan Road, Shuanggang Jinan District, Tianjin 300350 P.R.China Tel: 86 22 28592001 Fax: 86 22 285920 Email: [email protected] www.istianjin.org

Earth Day and the IB Learner Profile by Josianne Fitzgerald, PYP Coordinator
IST joined millions around the world to celebrate Earth Day on Wednesday, 22 April. Students honored Earth Day in many different ways and all showcased the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. Inquirers: Our students asked many questions about the environment and, more importantly, tried out solutions to our problems. Inquirers do not just ask questions, they find out things. Our students will hopefully be the ones inventing the technology that will green our planet and keep it safe for generations to come. Thinkers: Our students participated in many simulations of environmental challenges around the world. The ability to creatively solve problems is the mark of the international thinker and we all know that there are many environmental problems that will require creative thinking on the part of all. Communicators: Earth Day was first celebrated on 22 April 1970. It was first proposed by Gaylord Nelson, an American man who was concerned over the environment. He was able to communicate his vision of a day when the world would come together to honor our planet, and this week, all the students at IST discussed their visions for a better world. Principled: Every time a student chooses to place a piece of waste in a recycling bin, he or she is acting in a principled manner. It is much easier to leave trash laying about and it can sometimes be quite inconvenient to find that recycling basket. Still, we have many students at our school who on a daily basis bring their recyclables from home. Every scrap of material we can recycle or reuse is a resource we are saving. Open-minded: We all have our own ideas of what to do to save the planet. Students at IST listened to each other and kept open minds about other people’s ideas and opinions on the environment. Caring: In caring for our planet, we are caring for each other. IST students showed their caring for the environment throughout Earth Week as they participated in the different theme days: Nature Appreciation Day, No-Trash Lunch Day, Earth Day, Earth Poem Day and Earth Friendly Lunch Day. Risk-takers: Students participated in a variety of activities led by IST teachers, teaching assistants and staff. Many of the activities required students to try new things and to defend their actions. We must be adventurous in our push to protect the planet. The “same old things” will not be enough if we are to ensure a clean green planet. Balanced: The different activities that were offered on Earth Day guaranteed that everyone was able to do different things and consider many perspectives on the importance of being green. Reflective: Earth Week has been a week to honor our planet and to consider the problems it faces. Each one of our students reflected on what he or she personally does to make sure that the earth of tomorrow is greener than that of today. May that spirit of reflection guide them into making every day Earth Day.

Sports BRIEF
Last Saturday, the IST Varsity soccer team took part in the ISAC tournament at IST. After playing all the games for the ISAC league, our school team had been seeded third so, we had to play against the second seed team, DCB. We played really well in the first half; Se Wong scored as a result of a great run through the middle.
Also there was a Jae Ho’s nice free kick near the penalty box, but the goalie made a good save. Satisfied with the result of the first half, our team put even more effort into the game. Wonderful central midfielder in our team, Hong Jae, didn’t miss the chance; he cut off the pass from the defender to goalie and scored comfortably. After that, even though DCB scored one goal, we kept the score at 2-1, with solid teamwork. We could play in the final. We met DSP, the German school, in the final, who beat HISB by 2-0 in the first game of the day. They have pretty strong players, but we also have nice players. Therefore, without losing any confidence, we played the game. While playing a very tight game, DSP scored the first goal with a rocket of a shot that hit the post and went in. It seemed that we would lose our enthusiasm, but we never lost our hope of goals. Finally, with wonderful free-kick by Ha Jong, the score became 1-1. We thought we were going to play extra-time like last year, but DSP scored a lucky goal in the last minute of the game. Feeling hugely disappointed inside, IST could only get the 2nd place trophy. On Thursday, IST boys’ and girls’ varsity teams will leave for Nanjing to have ACAMIS tournament for four days. I hope both team will do their best and enjoy the last event of the soccer season in 2009.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————— High School Girls Soccer Team The IST high school girls’ soccer team played at the ISAC division 1 and 2 combined tournament, finishing 6th after some well played soccer on the day. In the first game against WAB JV, the girls played to a 0-0 tie at half time narrowly missing a goal on a partial breakaway clean shot wide of the net by Ariel Lin in the opening minutes. In the middle of the second half, the WAB JV girls scored a clean goal and converted another chance near the end for the 2-0 final. The IST girls then played TIS in the 5th/6th game, finishing the game tied 0-0, but losing on penalty kicks 2-1. It was a wellplayed tournament for a much-improved IST girl’s team. The roster included: Manon, Emilie, Serena, Marcela, Kathleen, Anna, Yeon, Jeong Won, Janey, Ibuki, Sae Mi, Olivia, Samantha, and Ariel.

Chengdu, in Sichuan, is a great place to visit. You can fly there direct from Tianjin and is about a 2 1/2
hour flight. There are lots of temples and parks to visit but a highlight is sitting in an outdoor tea house and sipping an endless supply of tea. You can even have your ears cleaned while you drink your tea! There is a lovely park called Renmin Park, full of people singing, dancing, plying musical instruments and it has a huge tea house. You can also visit Giant Pandas at the Breeding Research Center as well as shop in the Tibetan area for Tibetan prayer wheels or fabrics, or on Jin Li street for modern souvenirs. There is a great antique market where you can buy anything from antique Tibetan rugs to brass door handles. Chengdu also has wonderful spicy Sichuan hot pot restaurants as well as great street food and some very good western restaurants. Chengdu gets quite hot and humid in the summer but is very pleasant in Spring and Autumn.

Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong: From Chengdu you can fly up to Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong. These are
national parks of outstanding beauty. Although the parks gets thousands of visitors, you can walk along trails where you don't see anyone, as most people stick to the road and to riding the eco-friendly buses. I went there one April when the weather changed from warm sunshine to snow in the space of a few hours. Autumn would be beautiful with leaves changing colors. You may need to check with your travel agent if they are open to foreigners at the time of travel.
