The foreign minister of Malaysia, Rais Yatim, made a speech at the UN recently on behalf of his Deputy Prime Minister who incidentally was apparently too scared or too worried to make the trip. In his speech Rais made some statements that can only be considered as blatant lies. Rais claimed that Malaysia regarded itself as having no right to interfere in other countries' internal affairs. Malaysia has always been interfering in her neighbours' internal problems, especially when they involved religious and ethnic issues. Who would dare to deny that certain Malaysian politicians and its pro-government mass media have always expressed views, most of them totally unfounded, about events in southern Thailand and singapore ? The former Thai PM, Thaksin and Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew were regularly ridiculed and lambasted by certain quarters in Malaysia. News articles and "documentaries" were made alleging that Muslim Malays were discriminated in those countries and were "left behind" and "were suffering" economically. These allegations made by ruling voices in Malaysia are totally and patently false. Anyone with a brain need only to tune in to RTM 1 at 11 p.M. every Saturday ( it used to be sunday ) to hear the ridiculous and very laughable "expert view" aired to brainwash the gullible in the country. Anti-Jewish, anti-American fare used to be the staple, but lately anti-Musharraf, anti-Thaksin, anti-Myanmmar, etc.. have been added. Please do not regard listeners as stupid. More importantly, Rais claimed that Malaysia has its own set of laws and need not heed outside interference in administating justice. While all sovereign countries are entitled to use their own laws and set out their own judicial requirements, Malaysia is one of the few countries that do not mete out fair administration of justice. Opposition politicians and minority people are often intimidated by government officers and street toughs. Arrests by police are common as well. The police force is well known for its corruption, shady involvement with crime bosses and willingness to side with anybody who is on the government's favoured list. While it is unfair for America to criticise the Malaysian regime, Rais needs to be reminded that America has huge investments in the country. America also is a big market for its goods. Unfortunately, this has given rise to a huge immigrant worker presence in Malaysia, no thanks to the prevailing monetarilly and politically corrupt climate.
