Bible Factoids Stuff you really ought to know.

• From the word “Biblia” means books…. • It is a collection of those books determined to be “Canonical”…on the list of Inspired books… without error, containing the truth necessary for our salvation.

• (We’ll do a unit on how the canon came together at the end of the year.)There are 46 books in the Old Testament and 27 in the New.

Often the books are abbreviated.

• Find the list of abbreviations in your Bible. • Study them. Know them. I will quiz you!

The Bible Was not written in English…. The books of the Old Testament, for the most part, were composed in Hebrew and translated into Greek in Alexandria in about 300 B.C. This translation is called the Septuagint.

The New Testament was written in Greek. Old and New were translated by St. Jerome into Latin…This is called the Vulgate.

Torah • Or Pentateuch is the Law… the first five books of the Old Testament. • Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. • Tradition tells us that Moses composed these five books.
