Clos des Truffiers
Coteaux du Languedoc
Planted in 1968 by the local mayor, Max Rosset, the minuscule, 4-½ acre Clos des Truffiers vineyard, is without a doubt one of, if not, the oldest Syrah vineyard in all the Languedoc. Situated in the village of Saint-Pargoire, nearly a thousand feet above sea level, it overlooks the city of Béziers and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The soil is mostly arid, rocky sandstone with occasional limestone veins surfacing here and there. Little grows here but for truffle oaks (truffiers), scrub brush – and vines! The estate is owned by Jeffrey Davies, an American courtier/exporter who lives in Bordeaux. The vineyards are managed and the wines crafted by the same team that is responsible for the Chateau de la Negly, Jean Paux-Rosset and winemaker Claude Gros. Its vines are pruned severely, resulting in minuscule yields (averaging 8-15 hectoliters per hectare) and the grapes are harvested at optimal physiological ripeness, regardless of sugar or acidity levels
