Château Dereszla Tokaj

Hungary has a long tradition as a wine producing country and the winemaking has evolved over many centuries. Today, the most famous Hungarian wines come from the area around the town of Tokaj. These lusciously sweet white wines, which are made using botrytised grapes (aszú), are known as Tokaji. This is Château Dereszla’s specialty. Château Dereszla is a property that is undergoing substantial renovations following its acquisition recently by Groupe Edonia. Sweet yet balanced, rich yet transparent, full yet ethereal, the style of Tokaji is as individual and unique as one is likely to encounter. After languishing for forty years in relative ignominy behind the Iron Curtain, Tokaji is gradually but steadily regaining its justifiable reputation amongst a whole new generation of wine drinkers.

Château Henye Tokaj

Domaine Imperial Hétszőlő Tokaj

The Domaine Imperial Hétszőlő, classified as 1er Cru Classé (Primae Classes), was established in 1502 by the consolidation of seven smaller plots - Hétszőlő means “seven vines”. Today, Hétszőlő is masterfully guided by Dr. Tibor Kowacs, who oversees the 45 hectares planted on the steep slopes of Mount Tokaj. The estate’s modern winery facility is located just below the vineyards, which is essential for making quality wines. The ancient underground cellars are in the heart of the village of Tokaj. Each year, a half-dozen white wines (from dry to semi-sweet to sweet) are made from the careful blending of the estate’s 3 native grape varietals. These wines can be consumed either alone at the end of the day, as done traditionally in Hungary, or as an apéritif. Aszú wines (the richest and most sweet) will also perfectly accompany many rich foods, such as foie-gras, game, blue cheeses and desserts. It is also worth noting that an unfinished bottle can be kept for a week or two in the refrigerator without altering its quality - an indication of its ability to age for extended periods of time. All Aszú wines can be consumed upon their release, which is not until 2 to 4 years after harvest date. The greatest Aszú wines (notably the 5 and 6 puttonyos and eszencias) are among the world’s long lived wines and can age for decades.
