Basic Introduction Ch.17: The setting is up in the mountains, around evening time. The wind is blowing and the stars are shining. The Monster is asking Victor to make a female companion for him. Victor refuses at first, but then the Monster promises that he will leave Europe and anywhere else that man resides, if he gets the female companion. Victor agrees to the terms. The consequences Victor must face is keeping his word and making a creature as hideous as the Monster. The Monster in this chapter is memorable. We get to see that he has feelings and emotions that allow us to sympathize with him and his wanting for a companion like himself. Ch.18: The setting is the home of Victor’s father, and later in Strasburgh and then England. Victor is trying to delay as much as possible the creation of the female monster. Victor’s father notices that Victor’s mood has become better and want Victor to marry Elizabeth as soon as possible. Victor doesn’t want to celebrate a marriage while he still need to create the female monster, so he says that he needs to go to England for a change of scenery and will marry Elizabeth immediately when he returns. It is decided that Clerval will accompany Victor. Clerval is a memorable character in this chapter. He is much more alive and cheerful than Victor, and is in awe of the sights seen on their trip. It seems that nature effects Clerval differently than Victor. Clerval is already happy, so the presence of nature is has a greater effect on Clerval. Ch.19: The setting is England, and the scenery is beautiful. Clerval and Victor admire the nature around them. Victor would be enjoying himself more if it wasn’t for the fact that he would soon have to make a new creature. Victor also notices that Clerval is the man he once was: curious and eager to gain knowledge. The contrast between Clerval’s and Victor’s personas is much more noticeable. In the end, Victor and Clerval part ways. A memorable character this chapter is Victor. It seems that nature doesn’t seem to be helping his depression as much as it used to. Victor notices that he is very different from the man he used to be.
