Differentiation means assigning more work to some students and less to others. A differentiated classroom provides choice. A learning contract is used with students who have behavior problems. Tiering assignments means that they are watered down for slower students. Pre- and ongoing assessments guides differentiated instruction. Anchor activities are busy work.

Differentiated instruction means having high expectations for all students. In differentiated instruction, students are always grouped homogeneously (based on readiness). Differentiated assignments should be offered at all times.

A differentiated classroom lets the students and the teachers choose what will work best for the group, so that they can learn the most. A learning contract is for all students, so that both the students and the teacher know what is expected of them during a certain unit.

Sometimes a teacher should assign the same assignment to all the different levels in the class to see where all of the students are in comparison to learning levels. Teachers shouldn’t assign more homework to some students, just work of a higher complexity for the students who can handle it.

“Our schools […] can establish heterogeneous communities of learning (attending to issues of equity) built solidly on high-quality curriculum and instruction that strive to maximize the capacity of each learner.” By differentiating instruction, you’re playing into your students’ strengths, so all of them should meet you’re high expectations, because they are able to do the work. In differentiated classrooms, the students should be grouped not only on their readiness, but their interest in the subject area, and their learner profiles.
