Kim and Carrots

by Clara Vulliamy

Kim is riding on the train. Kim’s friend Lucy wants a turn.

Kim is kind. Kim and Carrots wave when Lucy and Mouse ride by.

Lucy and Kim play with blocks. Lucy wants the green block. Kim wants it, too.

But there are lots of blocks to share! Kim and Lucy build a tower together.

Now Kim and Lucy share the playhouse . . .

BABYBUG is for babies who love to be read to—and for adults who love to read to them. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of this “play with me” issue of BABYBUG. 1. Kim and Carrots: Most toddlers love to play with

2. Zippity Zappity: Lighthearted rhymes such as

other children, but they’re beginners at taking turns and sharing. They need lots of support to keep the fun going. Kim has already learned that offering friends a turn doesn’t mean losing one yourself. But such knowledge takes time to build. Here are some ways you can make sharing easier: Look for activities that toddlers can enjoy side by side, such as running with scarves in the March wind, jumping off a low step, or digging in the sand. Reassure your child that a very special possession (such as Carrots!) needn’t be shared with others. You could also provide toys such as balls or wagons that encourage children to interact.

this one expose children to a valuable emergent literacy concept: words can begin differently but still sound the same at the end. You might try inventing similar rhymes. Just change the first sound of any word to create a joyful string of nonsense rhymes.

3. Rolling Game: Real experiences add up to real understanding. Watch your baby figure out what rolls when pushed—and what doesn’t. You might also notice other ongoing inquiries: What makes a noise when dropped and what lands quietly? What rattles when shaken and what is silent? – Sally Nurss, M.Ed.
