This hat is worked in the round, from the band up to the top of the hat. Photo note: Propeller is attached to a different hat pattern. Hat will look like flower and ball hats. Dc dec = double crochet decrease = Yarn over (YO), insert hook into dc in previous row, yo, draw through, yo, draw through 2 loops, yo, insert hook into the next dc in previous row, yo, draw through, yo, draw through 2 loops, draw through 2 loops 2 more times until you are left with 1 loop on the hook. Band Row 1: Row 2-X*:

Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 4 ch, ch1 turn. Sc into the back loops of each sc, ch 1, turn. *Where X = the desired circumference of the hat, usually 11-12”for a newborn – avg. newborn head circumference is 13”-14.5”

Finishing the Band : Fold band in half. Sc across, placing the hook through the back loops of the side of the band you just finished and the free loops of the beginning of the band. This joins the two sides together to make the band. Body of Hat Row 1: Row 2: Rows 3-9:

Row 10: Rows 11-12: Row 13: Row 14:

Turn the band so the loop created by the last sc is on top. Ch 1, sc around the edge of the band. Try to space your stitches evenly. It does not matter how many stitches you have, so there is no need to count your stitches as you work. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Ch 3, dc in each sc around the band. Join with a sl st to the first dc. Ch 3, dc in each dc around hat. Join with a sl st to the first dc. At this point, the hat should measure 3” - 3 ½” from scs around the top of the band, depending on the length of the band. If you have not reached this measurement, please repeat the last row until you do reach 3” - 3 ½” Ch 3, (dc dec, dc), around the hat. Join with a sl st to the first dc. Ch 3, dc dec, repeat around the hat. Join with a sl st to the first dc. Repeat this row until the top of the hat is almost closed. Stop here if you do not want the pointy top. Ch1, sc around, join with a sl st to the first sc. Ch1, sc around, join with a sl st to the first sc. Sl st across the top of the scs to close the point. Fasten off and weave in ends.
