Baby Hat with Pointy Top Supply List: Can be made with any yarn – I recommend a soft sport yarn or worsted weight yarn Hook appropriate for the yarn you use Yarn needle to weave in ends Measuring Tape Key: Sc = single crochet Dc = double crochet Ch = chain Sl st = slip stitch Dc dec = double crochet decrease Notes: Do not turn unless the pattern tells you to do so. This hat is worked in the round, from the band up to the top of the hat. Photo note: Propeller is attached to a different hat pattern. Hat will look like flower and ball hats. Dc dec = double crochet decrease = Yarn over (YO), insert hook into dc in previous row, yo, draw through, yo, draw through 2 loops, yo, insert hook into the next dc in previous row, yo, draw through, yo, draw through 2 loops, draw through 2 loops 2 more times until you are left with 1 loop on the hook. Band Row 1: Row 2-X*:
Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 4 ch, ch1 turn. Sc into the back loops of each sc, ch 1, turn. *Where X = the desired circumference of the hat, usually 11-12”for a newborn – avg. newborn head circumference is 13”-14.5”
Finishing the Band : Fold band in half. Sc across, placing the hook through the back loops of the side of the band you just finished and the free loops of the beginning of the band. This joins the two sides together to make the band. Body of Hat Row 1: Row 2: Rows 3-9:

Turn the band so the loop created by the last sc is on top. Ch 1, sc around the edge of the band. Try to space your stitches evenly. It does not matter how many stitches you have, so there is no need to count your stitches as you work. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Ch 3, dc in each sc around the band. Join with a sl st to the first dc. Ch 3, dc in each dc around hat. Join with a sl st to the first dc. At this point, the hat should measure 3” - 3 ½” from scs around the top of the band, depending on the length of the band. If you have not reached this measurement, please repeat the last row until you do reach 3” - 3 ½” Ch 3, (dc dec, dc), around the hat. Join with a sl st to the first dc. Ch 3, dc dec, repeat around the hat. Join with a sl st to the first dc. Repeat this row until the top of the hat is almost closed. Stop here if you do not want the pointy top. Ch1, sc around, join with a sl st to the first sc. Ch1, sc around, join with a sl st to the first sc. Sl st across the top of the scs to close the point. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Optional attachments for Pointy top hat: Tr = treble crochet = yo twice, place hook through stitch and pull up a loop. Yo and work off loops 2 at a time until there is 1 loop on the hook. Hdc = half double crochet = yo, place hook through stitch and pull up a loop. Yo and pull through all 3 loops on the hook Sc dec: = single crochet decrease = place hook through stitch and pull up a loop, place hook through next stitch and pull up a loop, yo and pull through all 3 loops on the hook. Flower (attach to pointy hat , but finish off after row 13 when Row 1: Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring. Row 2: (Ch 4, tr 3 times into the ring, ch 4, sc into the ring) 5 times to form 5 petals. Leave a 6-8” tail to sew flower to hat. Place flower over the point and use a yarn needle to sew the flower to the hat. Propeller (can be attached to a pointy hat or a hat without point) Row 1: ch4, join with a sl st to form a ring. Row 2: (ch 12, tr in 4th ch from hook, 3 tr, 3 dc, hdc, sc, 3 sc in ring) twice to form propeller. Leave a 6-8” tail to sew propeller to hat. Place propeller on top of the hat in the center and use a yarn needle to sew it to the hat. Ball (can be attached to a pointy hat or a hat without point) Row 1: Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring. Row 2: 6 sc into ring. Row 3: 2 sc in each sc. Row4-5: Sc in each sc. Row 6: Sc dec around. Leave a 6-8” tail to sew the ball to the hat. Place ball on top of the hat at in the center and use a yarn needle to sew it to the hat. © 2006 Little River Fiber Arts
