Sports journalist learns how to be a player Sports reporter Rachel Baribeau ’03 believes in getting a player’s perspective on the game—even if it means strapping on shoulder pads. In February, Baribeau (pictured left and below with teammates), who hosts a radio show on WEAMAM 1580 in Columbus, Ga., became the fi rst-known female broadcaster to fully participate in a professional football training camp, suiting up for five days of two-a-days with the Columbus Lions indoor football team. The idea came from her cohost, Mike Vee, who thought it would be great for Baribeau since female reporters rarely get the chance to experience playing football fi rsthand. Going into camp, Lions head coach Jason Gibson told Baribeau she’d get no breaks for being a girl. “I’m going to expect of you what I expect from all my other players,” Gibson said on the fi rst day. True to his word, the coach taught Baribeau to analyze plays, make routes, catch passes and take hits. In the process, she gained 30 new “brothers.” Baribeau’s moxie inspired fans around the country, who posted comments on the reporter’s Web site. When someone asked what her next adventure would be, Baribeau promptly signed up for Fast-Track Racing School at Rockingham Speedway in
their goals. She has teamed up with athletes on speaking tours and hopes to instill in children an “I can do anything” attitude—even if it means taking a hit on the field.
