Friday, January 16, from 4:00 pm in Hale 230: “Perfect Order: Recognizing Complexity in Bali,” a lecture by The Department of Anthropology's Distinguished Speaker in Cultural Anthropology, Dr. Steven Lansing of the Santa Fe Institute & University of Arizona. Steve Lansing is a professor in the departments of anthropology and ecology & evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona, and research professor at the Santa Fe Institute. He is the author of Priests and Programmers: Technologies of Power in the Engineered Landscape of Bali and Perfect Order: Recognizing Complexity in Bali (winner of the 2006 Julian Steward Award for best book in ecological anthropology). B2. February 9, from 4:00 pm in the Center for British and Irish Studies, Norlin Library: Anna Tsing will give a public lecture on her research on commodity chains. Reception to follow. Anna Tsing, one of the most respected current scholars of Indonesia, is a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar and Professor of Anthropology, University of California Santa Cruz. Her current research focuses on scientific and commercial connections involving matsutake, an aromatic wild mushroom appreciated in Japan and picked in forests across the Northern Hemisphere. C.
