Assignment 2 1. List and briefly discuss the types of engagement required from a learner in an elearning environment. The following listed below are the types of engagement required from a learner in an e-learning environment. •
Searching and selecting
•
Exploring
•
Testing
•
Analyze and synthesize
•
Collaborate and discuss
•
Understand and apply
•
Create and promote
Searching and selecting This is the first step that is to be taken by a learner to be able to engage in an elearning environment. It is the ability of a learner to make out where the information that he is looking for might be (searching), and (selecting) is the ability of the learner to pick the most appropriate material from wide range of resources that will meet the need of the learner. Exploring It almost has the same meaning as searching, but the difference is that it is loosely based on a set of criteria. In this process what the learner is doing is that he is just looking around for any information that might be of interest to him. Example is like somebody that wants to buy a newspaper; he is not sure whether to buy Pretoria news or Sowetan. He can just flip through anyone of the two in a relaxed environment looking for any information that will catch his attention. Testing This is a process whereby learners are trying their new conceived ideas to be able to find out whether the result that they will get will tally with their hypotheses. In as much many of the process of experiment could not be carried out in the real life as it may involve the lives of human beings for example an aeronautical engineers

test models of a new aircraft in wind tunnels before starting a commercial production, then a virtual experiments may be conducted that will look like a simulation.During this process learners can discover new knowledge and also confirmed the result of knowledge that has already existed. Analyze and synthesize These two activities always go hand in hand as learners break down into pieces the intricacy of a sequence of information (analyze) and reconstruct it as their own facts (synthesize). In our daily activities, we also go through this process of tearing down and building again. For example, if we want to carry out a renovation in our house, we will look for different quotations from different renovators. After getting the quotations, we will then sit down and look for the best among those quotations (analyze) and after that we will know look at the content of the quotation carefully so as to make sure that it will deliver the purpose why we are carrying out the renovation out in the first instance (synthesize). Collaborate and discuss This is one of the types of engagement that has really benefited me as a learner and it has helped me in my professional development. It is a process whereby learner contributes to knowledge by sharing his own view and understanding on a particular subject matter with other learners. I have being in a situation whereby I do not have a perfect understanding of a particular subject but after sharing it with other colleagues and we engage one another on the subject, it became clearer to me and it helped me to be able to construct meaning of my own. Understand and apply After being able to construct my own meaning based on the collaboration and discussion that I have entered into with other learners, it is now imperative that Iam able to have a grasp of the new knowledge (understanding) and also by being able to make use of the new knowledge (applying it) in providing solution to a particular problem or in taking decisions.
5
Create and promote After the learners are contented with their understanding of a particular subject matter, then they can look for way of packaging it in a way that it will be available for other learners. This new knowledge that has been packaged will be easily accessible by learners that have found themselves in an e- community through communication. This may not even be between learners alone; it may also involve learners and their audiences e.g. their facilitators or assessors.
