Asian
Tragedies
Baptist
World
Aid
(BWAid),
the
relief
and
development
arm
of
the
Baptist
World
Alliance,
is
responding
to
the
needs
in
Asia
following
Tsunamis’,
Typhoons,
Earthquakes,
flooding
and
mudslides.
New
Zealand
Baptists
have
links
with
Samoa,
and
are
seeking
to
assist
through
a
network
of
Baptist
churches.
The
tsunami
caused
many
deaths,
injuries
and
destruction.
In
the
Philippines,
local
churches
have
been
providing
shelter
and
relief,
but
it
will
take
many
months
to
reconstruct
and
develop.
A
BWAid
Rescue
24
international
team
is
now
in
the
Philippines,
working
with
local
Baptists.
There
is
now
great
fear
that
after
last
weekend’s
typhoon,
the
Philippines
will
be
struck
by
a
super
typhoon
this
coming
Saturday.
Meanwhile,
the
remnants
of
the
first
storm
have
caused
damage
in
Vietnam
and
Cambodia.
Meanwhile,
in
Indonesia,
two
earthquakes
in
two
days
in
the
Padang
area
have
caused
incredible
damage,
injury
and
loss
of
life.
Baptists
in
the
area
have
trained
and
prepared
themselves
for
such
disaster,
especially
since
the
tsunami.
Baptist
relief
workers
quickly
moved
in
to
the
disaster
area,
and
a
second
international
BWAid
Rescue

team
is
now
en
route
to
Padang.
Hungarian
Baptists
have
flown
from
Budapest
to
Padang,
joining
a
group
of
German
rescue
workers
who
were
chartering
a
plane.
The
team
of
twelve
includes
technical
rescuers,
dog
handlers
and
doctors.
Joining
them
in
Padang
will
be
a
team
of
three
from
North
Carolina,
USA.
Other
teams
are
being
formed
and
standing
by
in
case
they
are
needed.

Montacute,

Center
in

Church,

have
been
coordinating
the
program,
together
with
other
Baptist
leaders
around
the
world.
Baptists
throughout
the
world
are
showing
their
concern
about
these
tragic
disasters,
by
their
prayers
and
donations.
“We
need
your
financial
giving,”
pleaded
Montacute.
