Procedure:

1. The students will complete a pre-test that asks students to describe ways in which to improve attendance. 2. The lesson should begin by reading a short article about the importance of attendance in the workplace. Located on the back, “Steps for Maintaining Good Attendance” will be given to help students understand how to maintain good attendance. The counselor will connect the article to the importance of attendance at school. 3. Students will take turns reading paragraphs, and then the counselor will go over the 5 steps (pulled from Fremont Unified School District) that students should do regularly. a. Make attendance your highest priority. b. Know your schedule. c. Make daily use of your alarm clock. d. Get enough sleep. e. Arrange your transportation ahead of time. f.

Inform your supervisor/teacher directly in plenty of time if you are unable to perform your duties.

4. The school counselor should explain that all of the 5 steps are great ideas, they are not always possible because of problems at home or issues at school. 5. The counselor will then ask students what might keep a student from attending class regularly. a. Students should feel free to call out answer while the counselor writes them on the whiteboard. 6. The students should then get into a group of 3 to discuss ways that can lead the students to come closer to fulfilling all 5 steps. The students should work together to create at least 2 items per step that can help a person achieve that step. 7. The student will then share their strategies, and students not speaking should be instructed to take notes.

8. The counselor will then list some more strategies that help eliminate attendance issues, including some that can make alleviate stress at home: a. Mindful Breathing b. Body Scan c. Individual Counseling d. Focus Activities (Cards, board games, puzzles, etc.) e. Access to free transportation f.

Copy of schedule on phone

9. The class will end with students preparing goals about their own attendance and including strategies for how they will complete them. This will act as their posttest. 10. The students will also take a perception survey to provide information about the effectiveness of the lesson.

Plan for Evaluation: Process Data: All 11th graders, 423 students, will complete the lesson over the course of 3 days in their ELA classes. Perception Data: Perception data will be completed using a pre- and post-test assessing students’ abilities to find and use strategies that improve attendance. Students will also assess the lesson using a perception survey at the end of the lesson.

Outcome Data: 78% of 423 11th graders will regularly attend classes.

Follow Up: Teachers will provide information about students that regularly miss class or are not paying attention during class. These students will be pulled into small groups that can receive further help. These small groups should help improve the overall attendance for the Junior class from 76% to 81%.
