Evaluation To ensure that the benefits Asante provides or helps fund are valued and relevant to the community, the Asante Executive Team regularly evaluates the impact of particular programs. In 2007 this assessment took place over a four-month period. To evaluate each program, a number of criteria were reviewed, including duplication of services already offered in the community and whether it meets Asante’s Mission, Vision, and Values. The process also included reviewing any possible impact that changes might have on the community and, when appropriate, coordinating with outside agencies to meet those needs. In 2008 many of Asante’s successful programs will continue, while others will incorporate changes to better meet the community’s needs.

TheSpiritofGiving The RVMC and TRCH Foundations have worked to improve healthcare in southern Oregon and northern California for more than 20 years. Asante is a community-supported organization. To support the work of these exceptional hospitals, to honor someone, or to learn about planned gifts, contact the Foundation in Medford at (541) 789-5025, in Grants Pass at (541) 472-7300, or online at www.asante.org/giving.htm.

VitalRegionalEmployerAsante Health System employs nearly 4,000 people and is the region’s largest year-round employer. Our workforce includes highly trained nurses, therapists, pharmacists, and technicians as well as other staff in a variety of positions—all of whom have benefits not always available with other employers.

Partnerships

RecyclingRevenueBackintoOurCommunity When Asante buys food and local supplies, and when our employees spend their paychecks, these purchases support local businesses and create jobs. The result is economic benefits recycled back into our community, helping the region continue to prosper.

TheSpiritofCollaboration Collaboration among healthcare providers in our region can yield huge community benefits. Asante has fostered many successful partnerships that improve patient care and stretch precious healthcare resources. • One effective collaboration created the first outpatient cardiac catheterization center—the Cardiovascular Institute of Southern Oregon—which raised the region’s status of heart and vascular care to new heights. • The innovative partnership of RVMC and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) brings to the community the services of one of the nation’s most renowned women’s cancer surgeons, Joanna Cain, MD. This partnership provides leading-edge approaches to gynecological cancer treatment, making world-class care available to the women of the Rogue Valley. • TRCH and OHSU teamed up to create a unique approach to training new surgeons. The Rural Surgery Residency Program is the only one of its kind in the United States, filling a vital need for skilled doctors in nonurban areas. Residents participate in up to 400 wide-ranging surgeries during a 12-month rotation, packing two or three year’s worth of experience into one year of training. • Through the use of cutting-edge electronically transmitted echocardiogram technology, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatric Unit at RVMC partner with pediatric cardiologists at both OHSU and Legacy Emanuel in Portland. RVMC doctors and clinical staff conduct the echocardiogram, which is transmitted in real time to pediatric specialists at OHSU or Legacy Emanuel, who then advise on the best ways to stabilize the patient before he or she is transported to Portland for further treatment.

InvestinginOurPeopleAsante partners with Southern Oregon University and Rogue Community College to provide access to training programs so that our employees can update their skills and acquire new ones. In 2007 Asante and Rogue Community College launched the nation’s first healthcare informatics assistant (IA) training program. The collaborative program was made possible by a $433,000 grant from the Jobs to Careers initiative funded by the Robert Wood Johnson and Hitachi Foundations in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Labor. Asante has offered free college-level instruction to 23 qualified employees. The investment in the IA training totals $1 million, or about $42,000 per student.
