Breathless The world is getting strangled S.M Hussain reveals it creatively BY REGINA ANAND VEENA The Kala Ghoda festival was well lit by many artists exhibiting their creation with great enthusiasm. S.M Hussain has recreated mother earth with the help of fiberglass. He wishes to convey the message that the world is filled with plastic bags that chock the earth and makes it difficult for planet earth to breathe freely. He has recreated the different continents and covered with black depicting smoke. Hussain is originally a nature friendly artist who paints on the theme of nature and the effect of the different colours on the surface of the earth. This installation is about, all kinds of pollution’s that destroys the delicate ecological balance of our planet. It is we humans, the so-called “ Most Intelligent living being on the face of the Earth”, Who are responsible for damaging our Eco System, ignoring the dangers effecting the lives of every living being including our future generations. Research tells us that thin plastic bags will take more than 1000 year to disintegrate. It will remain in our soil, rivers, and dams and in oceans for 1000 years choking our drainage and will usher hazard to our Ecological System as thousands of animals, birds and sea creatures are dying every year . Every individual can and must contribute in saving our planet by avoiding and refusing to accept plastic bags. He believes that every little individual effort will make a big difference in our lives, as also for future generations and for all the living creatures on our planet. The natural effect by the mixing of different colours is well seen in his works. He is a pavement artist who paints on the theme to the effect with the depth of the colour. The influence of the different colours is well shown. The black colour element refers to the black smoke and all the artificial synthetic elements that pose a threat to the planet. The plastic that can’t be recycled is spreading on the surface of the earth like wild fire. The polluted continents of the world float in a sad and a depressed state. The bluish hue of the deep sea and it being the supporting feature of all the contents is well shown. The continents that float are colored in perfection taking into consideration the topography and the landforms. Brown in the painting depicts the landforms that constitute mountains, the soil and the sand. The earth is perfectly outlined and the majesty of the continents is maintained. There is a certain sense of disturbance to the divine and rhythmic tune of nature.
The installation was made of the fiberglass with the diameter of 10 ft’. The total dimension of the installation was 10 ft’ X 10 ft’ X 18 ft’ and it cost around 100,000/- to 120,000/- including material and transportation.
