Arousal Theory of Motivation
1 Arousal Theory A theory behind an arousal theory
What is the Arousal Theory? Arousal Theory: We work best when we are at an optimal level of arousal or when we are moderately aroused. ➔
Too much or too little arousal leads to bad performance
➔
THEREFORE, we are motivated to have enough arousal
3
4
Examples ➔
You will perform better on ➔ your psychology test if there is a moderate level of stress and arousal. But if it too much, so you will not do well.
We limit our exposure to noise and distractions in our environment by turning off the television, shutting off our phone or staying in a quiet room increase the chances of enhanced performance on the difficult task. 5
But this theory is not always true! ●
Some people seek more arousal than others. ○ They seek out high levels of arousal that others do not please to do. ○
FOR EXAMPLE, skydiving, bungee jump, handle dangerous animals, skyscrapers 6
What motivates some people to seek out such arousing activities? ●
Some people = sensation seekers ○ They tend to seek higher levels of arousal by participating in stimulating experiences.
7
MAO
Monoamine oxidase ➔ Is an enzyme that are assigned to destroy neurotransmitter (Dopamine, serotonin and etc). Sensation seeker seems to have less of these enzymes. ➔ One of the neurotransmitter, dopamine, is responsible for motivating us to receive reward. With less MAO, dopamine effect would last longer causing sensation seeker to seek rewarding experience from intense arousal. 8
EXAMPLES OF OTHER GROUPS 9
“
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Complete the below step first before moving on to the higher step BUT this does not always work! ,
10
For example,
In Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel risks his life to do things that he wants to. In other words, he prioritizes self-actualization before his safety needs. 11
“
Motivation as instinct
➔ Innate pattern of behavior🔥 ➔ Have since you born🔥
12
Want big impact?
For example, Ability of mother: This includes women’s enthusiasm in taking care of children, as well as the feelings of inadequacy and guilt for not being able to procreate.

SlidesCarnival icons are editable shapes. This means that you can: ● Resize them without losing quality. ● Change fill color and opacity. ● Change line color, width and style. Isn’t that nice? :) Examples:
