Macroteaching Topic: Applying Archimedes Principle By: Siti Rahayu Binti Mua’ai L20091002823

Previous Lesson 1.

2.

Pressure What is Pressure?? • Pressure is defined as force per unit area • P= F A

Pressure in liquids • P = hρg

Try This!!! Push the ball into the water. What do you feel???

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this lesson, you should be able to: • Explain Buoyant Force • Relate buoyant force to the weight of the fluid displaced • State Archimedes’ Principle

Today’s Activities: 1. Class activity – to investigate the relationship between the buoyant force and weight of fluid displaced. 3. Group discussion on Archimedes Principle’s application.

What is Buoyant Force?? Buoyant Force is….

An upward force resulting from an object being wholly or partially immersed in a fluid.

What is the relationship between the buoyant force and the weight of fluid displaced??

Liquid displaced

Buoyant force

ACTIVITY 1 !!! To investigate the relationship between the buoyant force and the weight of fluid displaced

From ACTIVITY 1..

ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE

ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE… State that, when an object is wholly or partially immersed in a fluid, it experiences a buoyant force equal to the weight of fluid displaced.

ACTIVITY 2 !!! Applications of Archimedes Principle…

Group 1, 3 & 5

In group, find.. - The working principle - How Archimedes Principle was applied?

Group 2, 4 & 6

Hot Balloon • The hot air in the balloon displaces the surrounding air, which is denser resulting in a bigger up thrust that causes the balloon to rise.

Submarine • Has special compartments – ballast tanks. • In diving – ballast tanks are flooded with sea water to increase the overall weight (higher than the buoyant force) • When water is forced out of its ballast tanks, the submarine rises.

Learning Outcomes… 1.

Explain Buoyant Force The upward force resulting from an object being wholly or partially immersed in a fluid.

4.

Relate buoyant force to the weight of the liquid displaced BUOYANT FORCE = WEIGHT OF THE LIQUID DISPLACED (for an object which immersed wholly or partially in fluid)

7.

State Archimedes Principle State that when object is wholly or partially immersed in a fluid, it experiences a buoyant force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced.

Pressure P=F A Pressure in liquids, P = hρg Si Unit: Pascal (Pa)

Bernoulli’s Principle

Homework!! 1. Page 100 in text book Question 1 and 2 4. Read page 100 – 101 in text book (Bernoulli’s Principle)

That’s all for today Thank you for your attention!!
